Shamanic Extracts & Shamans Explained.

Entheogens, popularly known as psychedelics or hallucinogenics, are among the most powerful and controversial substances known to man, and comprise approximately one-tenth of the 600,000-plus plant species identified so far. These and other mind-altering substances act by intensifying the user's mood and the situation he or she is in when taking the drug; as such, they have often been used in religious ceremonies and, more recently, in therapeutic situations

Ibogaine Experiences

Iboga, or eboka (Tabernanthe iboga Baillon) is a perennial shrub, with small yellow flowers and orange fruits of elongated oval shape. Its thick roots (both, primary and secondary) are used as hallucinogens. The roots are scraped, dried and powdered; its flavor is an aromatic bitter and when ingesting it, the interior of the mouth becomes numb. The iboga plant is considered "mature" after four years. Because of this the Bwitists have adopted a system whereby the plants are rotated by age group, and the secondary roots ore partially eliminated in each plant so that it may continue living and producing other roots. The most important active component of the roots is the indole alkaloid ibogaine (Raponda-Walker & Sillans 1961; Pope 1969; Gollnhofer & Sillans 1 983).
A collection of ibogaine experiences, all unedited, and grouped according to the reason for taking the drug.
Ibogaine is an experimental pharmacotherapy at a very early stage of development. It should be evaluated thoroughly and unless there is a sound medical reason in my opinion, should be withheld from no person in need.

Hello--I've been wondering if fermented beverages have been used historically to induce visionary experiences and poetic inspiration in European societies--including absinthe, whiskey, poitin (homebrewed whiskey) and strong wine. Do you know of any online information about this, or have you researched it personally? I'm doing private study of European shamanism, and would like to know more about how Europeans induced/handled consciousness-altering experiences in a shamanic or bardic context. Thanks in advance...

I liked your article about the different entheogens out there, but I think you forgot to talk about Rivea Corymbosa, it's a seed, just like Baby Woodrose that shamans use together with Salvia and psilocybin-containing mushrooms as the three-herb required to become a shaman as the Mazatec tradition stands.
