Ice Fishing For Walleyes
Walleyes will go into a semi-dormant state during winter months, but they don't stop feeding all together. The amount of food that they need to survive will be much less because of their slowed metabolism.
What this means is food eaten by walleyes in cold months will take longer to digest than food eaten in warmer months. This doesn't mean they become more finicky; they just have to eat more efficiently because of their sluggish nature and the scarcity of general forage food. A walleye won't travel any farther than is needed to catch food because this uses up energy and fat supplies needed for the spring spawn.
The environment's temperature and walleyes' metabolism cause them to be lethargic by design, not choice. This causes their feeding periods to be shorter and less predictable than other times of the year. The window of opportunity to target feeding walleyes may only last 10 or 15 minutes a couple of times a day.
Finding Fish Is Step One
Some Ways To Locate Fish

To achieve the above result you must first locate fish to catch. As lethargic as walleyes are in the winter, there are ways to locate them in a frozen lake.
A topographical map of the lake you are going to fish can be a start. Use a GPS unit to help pinpoint the promising areas and drill several holes. Some anglers will even use underwater camera equipment to check the selected area.
Friendly anglers or bait shop owners could also give clues as to where the fish usually hang out. One of the easiest ways to find fish is to look for the big crowd of shanties and anglers and try to find a spot in or around them.
Sometimes it may be necessary to try many different spots on the ice. This could prove to be tedious but the results may be very rewarding.

Choosing The Right Gear Is Important

The lures for catching winter walleyes don't have to be real fancy or expensive. Simple minnow-tipped jig heads or jigging spoons can prove to be very effective. Swimming/jigging lures are designed for ice fishing. They imitate bait fish and return to a horizontal position between jigging strokes.
The quality of the rod, reel and line that is chosen by a winter walleye angler is an important concern. Winter walleyes are notoriously light biters and the sensitivity of the rod is very important. Ice fishing rods come in many different sizes and materials.
There are different styles of reels to choose from also. They can be simple little plastic wheels or top quality spinning reels. The important thing is to keep them lubricated with some kind of temperature resistant grease.
Fishing line must have a compromise between feel and strength. There are many fishing lines on the market designed just for ice fishing.

Protection From The Cold

Protection from the elements is another important consideration. Many walleye anglers may have their "sweet" spot picked out and put a permanent shelter there for the winter. If you don't have such a "sweet" spot, a portable ice shanty is a good option.
These light-weight shanties can prove to be very handy when Mother Nature gets an attitude. They are easy to set up and easy to move if needed. Many have a built in sled to help carry all your gear to your location. These ice shanties can be small enough for one or fit up to four people. If needed, a small heater can be used to keep warm on those super cold days.
