The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Although the first Chronicles of Narnia movie kicked off with the 2005 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (UK Version) there is actually a prequel to this which is "The Magician's Nephew" which starts 1000 years (Narnian Time) before.
The odd issue with the Chronicles of Narnia is the ordering. There are two common orders for reading the original books written by C. S. Lewis and the movies started out by following the actual publication date which meant that the most popular book "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was filmed first. But for Ice Witch fans it's "The Magician's Nephew" (hopefully the 4th Narnian film) which should be of most interest because this centres around Jadis, The Queen of Narnia.

In "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," Jadis has turned Narnia into a land where it is always winter but never Christmas. That's why she is also known as The Ice Witch or The White Witch. She rules by fear, turning those who oppose her into stone. This is demonstrated in the movie when the poor Faun, Mr Tumnus, ends up as a statue.
She is a woman obsessed with power and devoid of emotion for any other creature. Tilda Swinton plays Jadis to perfection.

Prince Caspian
There is a plot by a dwarf called Nikabrik to bring the Ice/White Witch back to life so they can use her to overthrow the oppressive King Miraz. The plot does not work - which is a shame because we don't see enough of Jadis.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader
In the movie she appears to Edmund, first as a bad dream and then as a trickery of the mind. Jadis tries to tempt Edmund to bring her back to life.

The Magician's Nephew

"The Magician's Nephew" is reported as being the 4th Narnia Movie - as yet unscripted and filming has not begun. You can keep up-to-date with any developments on this film by bookmarking my article here >> 4th Narnia Movie: The Magician's Nephew
If Tilda Swinton is on-board to play Jadis again for the 4th Chronicles of Narnia movie, then I'm very excited about this film. There's a reason why "The Magician's Nephew" has always been the 2nd most popular Narnia book. And that reason revolves around the thirst people have for knowing more about Jadis. So for Ice Witch/White Witch fans, this is fantastic news.

- Jadis' "Deplorable Word" (Magician's Nephew) is C.S Lewis' metaphor for the atomic bomb. Remember that the first 'bomb' was dropped in Lewis' lifetime, it was the 'shock of the century' for everyone. Artists and writers searched for ways to express the horror of the nuclear (and later hydrogen) bomb - Lewis succeeded where they failed by stripping the bomb down to its moral essentials. What was it - not what was it scientifically but what was it morally? It was a weapon that could end life on a scale not imagined before. To imagine it as the "secret of secrets" that a wicked witch would "learn in a secret place and pay a terrible price to learn" was a masterful way of exploring the subject. And notice how C.S has Jadis use "the Deplorable Word" (aka the metaphor of the atomic bomb) - right at the moment when she had lost the Charn power struggle to her sister. "'Victory' she said. 'Yes victory' I said 'But not for you'. Then I spoke the Deplorable Word and I was the only living thing remaining in Charn'." A victory - but at what price? Jadis herself would have died with her dying world had Digory not awakened her and (through a series of unfortunate accidents) let her enter Narnia. Worth thinking over, whenever the White Witch Jadis is discussed.

- White witches are known for being the good witch while black or red witches the bad. Disney certainly knows how to spin a tale of intrigue and imagination that can capture young and old alike. Nicely reviewed.

- Why do you think they cast a blond White Witch in the movies when in the books she is very clearly dark haired? BTW, I wouldn't say the Magician's Nephew centers around Jadis. She's there, but not central. Even Uncle Andrew is more central.

- Well The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe was a Disney movie - I never expected that they would stick slavishly to the book. Tilda, who played the White Witch, suggested that her look was based on the Aryan race due to the time period and also that the look is a stark contrast in the movie to Edmund's dark hair. I would say it's more to do with creating an Ice Queen style.
Jadis, for me, is central to the Magician's Nephew because she is such a powerful character - not based on how often she actually appears in the book. But I should have made that clearer. Thanks for your interesting comments, I appreciate you stopping by.
