Ice Fishing Bait

Ranked #3,679 in Sports & Recreation, #96,535 overall

What is the best bait for ice fishing?

I have found that for ice fishing you can use pretty much anything that you want except lures that are designed to be pulled through the water. You can use lure that are tied on the top and you just need to make them bob up and down a little or you can use a bait.

For bait you can use any kind of creepy crawly that you want. The more wiggly the creature, then the better it is going to be for attracting your catches. Worms are excellent for this kind of fishing buy I have found that sometimes you can just turn over a rotten log and use what you find underneath.

Live and wiggly is the way to go.

Lures are the best.

How Do I Find Worms?

Why are there worms on my sidewalk?

The easiest way to find worms is to just go out on a rainy day and fill your bait bucket by picking them off of the roads sidewalks and driveways.

Another way is to give your lawn a good watering in the late afternoon then go out at night to look for some. You are going to want to bring a flashlight with you and to slowly walk you yard in a grid pattern looking for them.

You could also wet down your wife's garden and start to dig. I would not recommend picking worms out of your own garden, or her garden though because worms are very good for the soil and are a gardeners best friend for creating great planting soil.

I can't find a bait shop!

A can of corn that can be used for ice fishing bait.Don't panic. It is not the end of the world. It is not even the end of your fishing trip.

There are other options out there when you cant find, or are not located near a bait shop.

One of those options is to just go into any local grocery store or even a convenience store and buy some canned corn. You would be surprised at just how well this works. There are other canned products that you can use like sardines and other smelly stuff like that.

The best option is to just find your own bait. If you are out in the wilderness then you can just flip over a log and collect what ever is underneath into your bait bucket. Maybe you might even want to think about collecting worms off of sidewalks on rainy days.

Those are just a few ways to get your own bait with out the use of a bait shop. Some of those ideas might even save you a few bucks in the process, so get out there and get dirty.

Warning!

If you are planning on eating any of the wild bait that you find, I strongly suggest that you cook it thoroughly. Some bait items contain parasites and diseases that could make you very sick.
