ID Cards for Secure Operations
Just a few years back, it was commonplace to carry or wear a laminated badge. Photos were taken by Poloroid cameras and die cut to the size needed to place on the insert that would be laminated. Although still in use, this method of making badges is less frequent then badges made out of PVC cards.
Current identification industry standards use software and a specialized id card printer to print the card information directly on to PVC. The standard card has the look and feel of a credit card.
Basic badge design software for id badges is often bundled with a printer when purchased. Advanced software will house a database, pull information from an Access file or mySQL file, and provide other specialized functions.
Printers will print either single or dual sided cards. Optional modules on better quality printers allow for mag encoding and secure lamination on one or both sides of the cards.
Identification companies provide individual pieces or complete id card systems based on the specific needs of the organization acquiring the system.
Manufacturer warranties and technical assistance are available in different amounts. The variance is due to the standards of the manufacturer of the product and the abilities and services of the company providing the system.
Custom ID badges without Purchasing a System
These service bureau companies have the ability to create a bagde design based on criteria required by the company requesting the service. Once the badge design is finalized, the service bureau will accept the unique text, photo and other information needed to make the badge. Once made, the badge(s) is delivered or picked up by the organization for use.

ID Badge Making Thoughts
1. What will the badge be used for? Do you need to include functions such as access badging or encoding in the card?
2. What will the layout of the card look like? What is required on the card and where will that information be placed? Will the card lay horizontal or vertical?
3. Will the badge be printed on a single side or will both sides of the card need to display information? Will the information on the back of the card vary or be the same for each badge?
4. Will the process be handled in house? Who will be in charge of the badge making process? Will extra security measures need to be put in place to secure the id badge process?
