A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future

This book kick started my thinking about the creative economy. I was familiar with Dan Pink from his writing for Fast Company magazine. It is an encouraging read for people who aspire to make a living from ideas.

Amazon Price: $10.20 (as of 07/26/2008)

The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life

I am reading this book right now. The world according to Tharp is interesting in that she has a rich and varied set of insights that span a knowledge of the classics to business today.

Amazon Price: $10.20 (as of 07/26/2008)

The Ten Faces of Innovation: IDEO's Strategies for Defeating the Devil's Advocate and Driving Creativity Throughout Your Organization

I am fascinated by the idea of anthropology as a part of the creative process. We don't just sit around waiting for the muse or serendipity to strike - so the first of the 10 faces resonated with me. Well written book that is an excellent follow up to The Art of Innovation.

Amazon Price: $19.77 (as of 07/26/2008)

The Art of Innovation: Lessons in Creativity from IDEO, America's Leading Design Firm

Buy this book for the section about brainstorming - if for no other reason. Brilliant.

Amazon Price: $19.77 (as of 07/26/2008)

Creative Whack Pack

Roger von Oech wrote a classic call 'a whack on the side of the head' that I read in the 80's, his style is whimsical but also uncommonly engaging!

Amazon Price: $16.00 (as of 07/26/2008)

Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention

Ok, a little more academic than some of the others, but thought provoking and filled with academic insight.

About Idealog

I am founder of Idealog Magazine. My partners and I launched in December 2005 here in New Zealand to explore the creative economy and to give it a voice. Innovation is at the heart of a successful future - but it is complex. Individuals and organisations (and, increasingly, countries) struggle to create ideas that will work in the market. We wrestle with issues like intellectual property ownership and speed. In New Zealand we struggle with remoteness and size - though from those lemons we are making plenty of lemonade.
My particular area of interest is in generating viable ideas concept, prototype and implement. My specialist area is in developing commercial media properties (Idealog is already New Zealand's largest distribution business magazine), Family Health Diary is a magazine style commercial format to promote medicines and wellbeing products and is one of the largest single advertisers on New Zealand TV. Eating Well is its sister product.
I learned the business of commercial creativity at the coal face in advertising agencies where I was creative director.
I also teach at Massey University's school of design in Auckland.
