Summer Fun Activities & Project For Kids

My son has been on summer break for a month while my nieces and nephews only a few weeks due to the variations in school calendars in the United States. However, they both have one thing in common. They are looking for something to do to fill their summer.

I have work of my own to do this summer and cannot spend my days serving as a camp counselor or chauffeur and so we need to find things for them to do that captures their interest and challenges them enough to let me focus on my work. However, I do not want them to spend their days watching television and playing video games -- in fact my experience is that won't really occupy them for long anyway.

This lens is all about the various projects and plans we have laid to keep our kids occupied this summer.

What would make a great collection for a kid to start this summer?

When I was a kid I had a rock collection and a water-smoothed glass collection. Noah has a toy soldier collection and he also collects Pokemon cards. This summer he wants to build on the coin collection his grandfather gave him and learn more about the coins he already has.

I can remember building elaborate lincoln log settlements as a kid with my brother. My son has inherited similar tendencies as even now there is a large lego community (or it might be a pirate base) established in my living room. He also has Kinx and a robot building kit. What do your kids like to build?

Noah learned how to swim in the summer because that is when our local pool offers lessons but he has three things he wants to learn this summer -- he wants to learn how to water ski and ride a skateboard and he would really like to learn a language. What do your kids want to learn?
