Vintage Wedding Ideas - Vintage Centerpieces

Ideas for vintage weddings are growing as the popularity increases. Vintage centerpieces are part of the decor for your vintage wedding. Make them different!

You can still have a vintage theme and not be "one of the crowd". Your interpretation of "Vintage" can be quite different from someone else's. Capitalize on this and it will make your wedding reception unique.

The underlying attraction of vintage themes is that it can be romantic, sophisticated and glamorous -- everything most brides want. It's not a surprise that Vintage weddings are growing in popularity. Narrowing your focus to one area (like travel themed weddings) will increase the uniqueness of your event.

Narrowing Your Focus

As vintage weddings grow in popularity, you need to find an angle to keep your wedding unique. Instead of the all encompassing "Vintage" as your theme -- narrow it down to something you can make a bit more unique. Take a look at some of the vintage wedding ideas and suggestions below and put your thinking cap on. You never know where that perfect idea will come from:

Around the World Passport Invitation by occasionINVASION

Vintage Travel Themed Wedding -- A vintage travel theme can go in different directions, whichever you chose.
  • Places | Destinations -- Roam the world when travel was in its' heyday. Rome, London, Paris, New York... Have tables named after cities or countries and use items for your centerpiece that bring that city to life for you! Travel guides, globes, maps, postcards, tourist sites, wine, food, culture, etc...
  • Places You've Been -- Use souvenirs, photos and memorabilia from your own travels. Did you live in a lot of different places during your life? Travel a lot? Use this to narrow your theme. It will be unique because it's all about you!
  • Travel - Transportation -- Use vintage cars, planes, trains and buses as your inspiration. Vintage advertising, travel items such as suitcases, tickets, luggage tags, hat boxes, gloves and hats from travel in its' hey day is a great way to interpret a vintage travel theme.

Art Deco Black Tie Affair Invitation by cowboyannie

Vintage Garden | Vintage Country -- This theme can be taken in a bunch of different directions. English or French gardens would work. Flowers are a must but mix with them watering cans, gardening gloves, trowels, old seed packets, garden signs made of old wood (great for table names/numbers), old garden statues, unique planters, etc... Dig through your garage or shed and find things that remind you of gardening and then use them in your centerpiece.

Vintage 1920's, 30's, 40's & 50's -- Easier times, dinner was an event, people dressed up to go anywhere, you knew the milkman and the postman by name -- Vintage America. Flappers of the Roaring 20's, Art Deco design, USO style from the war years, milk bottle vases, hats, pearls, retro signs or photos, mid-century modern touches if that's your favorite vintage era. Lot's of possibilities here.

Vintage Hollywood Glamour Couple by TailoredType

Vintage Hollywood -- Again, this can be taken in different directions. The Oscars and the glamor of Hollywood on its' biggest night, or just the feel of being a celebrity like Audry Hepburn. Pearls, birdcage hats/veils, costume jewelry, top hats, clapboards, black and white celebrity photos, feathers, lace, calla lilies, movie reels and canisters and so much more.

Vintage Las Vegas -- The Rat Pack, Fremont Street, The Stardust Hotel, sharkskin suits, martinis, lounges, celebrities and more come to mind when you think of vintage vegas. Recreate it for your wedding by using lighted centerpieces, rich chocolates and coppers, over sized cocktail glasses and bling.

Vintage Centerpieces

What makes a centerpiece vintage?

Vintage is defined as:
Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic
by YourDictionary.com

In decor terms, that is a perfect description. Think about your living room. Do you have a theme? How do you get that theme across in your design? One way is by arranging items that remind you of the theme in a grouping on a coffee or sofa table, book shelf or mantel. We do this all the time in the different rooms of our homes. Take this mentality and use it in creating centerpieces for your vintage theme wedding.

Reusing vintage items in new ways or simply using them as part of a display is eco-friendly and gives you a vintage vibe. It can be a money saver as well and staying on budget is always important for weddings.

Ideas for Vintage Wedding

Vintage Centerpieces

After deciding the focus for your vintage theme, walk through your home and get some vintage wedding ideas for the decor. Do you have anything that could be used? What about in the attic, garage, basement or at your mom or grandma's house? Vintage items are all around us. Find them and use them. Here are a couple of pictures of items I found in my own home and grouped together for a vintage looking centerpiece. For a vintage travel themed wedding, this is what I quickly put together...

Travel Centerpiece 1Image Credit - Mandee Sears/DecoratingforEvents

This first one was pretty easy. I had a 15" globe (perfect for a travel theme) that I set on top of a vintage ivory colored jewelry box.

I set a journal with a travel motif on a plate holder I had sitting around the house and then leaned a luggage tag against the jewelry box.

The colors are are similar and all appear in the travel journal cover. I think a chocolate table cloth as a base would really set this grouping off. Simple, yet definitely travel themed.

This second one is stolen from the top of my husband's dresser. He loves old boats and vintage boxes. I used one of each and added a lantern, a shell necklace and a small globe paperweight.

Again, not hard but conveys the travel theme well. Remember, with a travel theme, you can use transportation as an option. Boats and ships work well here too.

This last one is a Paris themed grouping. I had an Eiffel Tower shaped candle I placed next to two books I covered in kraft paper (and wrote on the spine) and stacked with a vintage picture frame holding an old postcard of the Arc de Triomphe.

I added the small globe paperweight again and I was done.

I would add some candles and maybe a long stem rose or flower to finish them off. The linens and the rest of the table setting would give it a finished look.

Ideas for Making Vintage Centerpieces

Add Some Flair!

Let's say you have chosen a Vintage Hollywood theme. You found a Top Hat Ice Bucket you want to use. What do you put with it to make it seem vintage?

Place a Clapboard on a plate stand and add a
Filmstrip Picture Frame
. In the frame use pictures of vintage celebrities or Grauman's Chinese Theater on awards night. Have a string of pearls draped from the top hat down and a pair of gloves resting against the clapboard.

And don't forget to add a bottle of wine or champagne with a Custom Vintage Label you make on your computer inside the top hat ice bucket!

A couple of vintage touches will make the overall effect more vintage.

Vintage on eBay

eBay is a wealth of reusable items for the eco-minded couple. almost anything you can think of is available there and, usually, at a good price. Introduce some earth saving strategies into your wedding by recycling, re-using and reducing!

Don't forget Maps!

to add Vintage Flair

Paris Map Save the Date by redskydesigns

Antique or vintage looking maps can be used in a variety of ways in conjunction with your centerpiece. Use them on top of your table cloth as a base for your centerpiece. Or, lean it against one of the items you are using and make it part of your centerpiece. You could cut a large map poster and use it in many different ways.

You could also use them in other places to continue the theme like the buffet table, gift table, cake table or head table. Use them as the background paper for your printed menus or table name/ numbers. Using them as placemats is another interesting possibility.

Don't use a modern looking map though, you know the ones printed on white paper with lots of red and blue lines? The parchment colored maps look more vintage or antique.

I think these are great. I am planning a 50s vintage theme (not poodle skirt/sock hop style). I am gathering vintage 50s items (saddle oxford shoes, old radio, books, magazines and comics...etc.). I am still struggling with how I will put them all together in the middle of the tables at my reception.
