- Reduce thatch (the layer of dead grass and grass roots that has accumulated on top of the soil surface).
- Fertilize your lawn.
- Mow high (higher lawn means deeper roots). Mow no shorter than 2 inches.

- Outline your flower gardens with gardening timbers.
- Purchase a few bags of landscaping pebbles or rocks.
