Interesting comments. Thanks for the info. I have been doing a lot of research about going green and and have come to realize that getting off the grid is a big part of it. By just having the basics (food, water, energy) makes all the difference. If you are producing your own food, water and energy you are completely free. You are dependent on no one. Check out www.whatisgoinggreenabout.com if you want to learn more.

I suggest we require colleges to let students reuse books and and sell access codes only to books and not require them to buy a whole new book to get an access code and make perfectly good copies unusable. This will save so many tree's not to mention help reduce cost in a bad economy. as far as recycling the books, that is using more energy, when all that is needed is a access code

Cool lens. As a renewable energy lover myself, I really appreciate your thoughts. I really like the 3R concept, you have mentioned on this lens. We have to question many things we have taken for granted for years and years. Oil is no longer can keep to the demand of this world as opposed to what people thought a century ago. Even water is no longer available freely and even becoming a scary resource.

We are already late on tackling these problems. But now is better than never. Keep your good work up.
  • annettestevenson Apr 3, 2010 @ 6:10 pm | delete
We have been using any trees that have fallen down on our property to make mulch, and that has severly reduced our need for watering. And yes, we replant as our trees age so that we will always have a beautiful green canopy! Thanks for the interesting lens.

DOG POO - i usually put the hose onto its and it drains into my lawn - it does not kill the grass and the same time i'm not using plastic bags to pick it up. i even water it in around my trees
  • angel5746 May 26, 2010 @ 6:03 pm | delete
I have little ones inside who use reusable pee and poo pads. I pick up the poo with toilet paper and put it in the toilet and flush it. It goes into our septic system and is finally leeched through the leech lines and into the soil. Wonderful way to dispose of it.
  • GoGreenYoga Feb 16, 2010 @ 1:41 pm | delete
nice lens - I'm always looking for new ways to "go green" I agree with you to reuse whenever possible. Most common items can serve at least 2 purposes. I like making my own eco-friendly cleaning products as well.

The picture of the bedroom at the top is GORGEOUS. I want to be in that room right now. So clean, so nice. The picture or trash, on the other hand, was not so pretty. Made me gag. Trash es no bueno!

This is a fantastic set of tips. We are in agreement with your sentiments about plastic bottles. They're not going anywhere any time soon.

Have you see Earthships? They actually use plastic and glass bottles in the construction of the houses instead of bricks to re-use the bottles and cut down on the amount of concrete being used in the construction of the houses.

We have over 300 tips for going green on our site as well.

    Thanks for your great lens!

I think if we returned to glass bottles for cokes, milk, catsup, etc, this would really help. All the glass can be recycled and would really help on the landfill problem
  • Ramkitten Feb 6, 2009 @ 9:37 am | delete
Ah, yes, clearning clutter--something near and dear to my heart. And that part about doggie clean-up definitely hit home. Our city of Flagstaff, AZ has those plastic "doggie bag" receptacles all over. Too bad they aren't filled with biodegradable bags instead, but perhaps the cost would be too high? Given that they're trying to trim the budget like everyone else, I doubt this would be the time to implement such a change, but perhaps I'll try anyway. Thanks for a great lens.
  • Your_Spacious_Self Jan 29, 2009 @ 6:13 pm | delete
