Marketing Encyclopedia for the Small Business

Ranked #41,999 in Business & Work, #540,782 overall

So why did I create this lens? I currently run a real estate title firm in Orlando, Florida. Along the way, we developed strategic alliances with a number of small mom and pop businesses. When I approached these businesses about joint marketing our complementary businesses, they said they had no marketing set up. It was your traditional run of the mill marketing such as advertising and word of mouth. They asked me to assist with new marketing efforts. This lens is a dedicated site of marketing ideas that we have implemented and will potentially implement across a variety of businesses. Some worked and some were a failure. However, if you had some measure of success that isn't mentioned, please add it as I want this to be an informational forum for all visitors.

Prospecting

Not for the Faint of Heart

What is the difference between prospecting and marketing
  • As part of a short term lead generation strategy, prospecting is more aligned to meet your needs. Prospecting is finding people who need your services whereas marketing is attracting customers by having people find you when they have a need. If you are just starting out in a business, prospecting is the way to go as it is less expensive and allows you to actively seek business.
The main way to start is to identify your sphere of influence. When you start the business, write a letter to everyone you know from your mother to your veternarian and let them know about your new business. Always ask for a referral if they aren't a potential candidate for your services. While there is much more to marketing, this is to give you an initial idea of what to work with.
