Who Cares About Identity Theft?

The credit reporting companies and Lifelock have made such a big deal about being protected from Identity Theft. What's the big deal? What difference does it make to you? It doesn't, until Identity Theft happens to you.

However, when "shopping" around for a plan that protects you, there are a few things you ought to know.

True or False

1. ID Theft companies insure you for your actual dollar loss suffered as a result of Identity Theft?

2. Your credit card companies will reimburse you if you notify them within 90 days of an ID Theft incident.

3. All my family members are covered on one policy for no additional charge.

If you answered true to any of the above statements, you might want to do a little investigative work of your own.

Don't innocently hand over the safeguarding of your identity to a company whose shtick is a man riding around the US with his social security number written on his van. Could Little Tommy Tucker singing for his supper in his second day job a reality if you don't use the Credit Bureaus Credit Monitoring program? No.

What If Identity Theft Happens To You?

Identity Theft is a reality. If you choose to ignore it, be prepared to spend months trying to re-establish your identity, your medical records, your driver's license, your birth certificate, and so on.

A vast majority of people buy "protection" without having a clue of what if the worse-case scenario happens. Not all protection is the same. Not all identity restoration is the same either. As a matter of fact, there are so many different interpretations of what restoration entais.

With credit reporting companies, identity restoration services are kits, like a box of documents. When you need the services the most, go ahead and ask the box. See what it tells you.

Sorry, but my dander is up with all the semantics being used to walk a fine line in selling services. Don't be caught unaware and get short shrift at the time you need services most.
