Identity Theft Prevention
Identity Theft is a growing problem. But what exactly is it?
In simple terms identity theft occurs when someone uses your drivers license, bank accounts, social security number or personal identification information without you knowing. Therefore identity theft prevention requires securing this information from predators.
There are many different ways that you can fall victim to identity theft. Many of them are preventable due to their obvious nature but some are a bit harder to detect.
So, then, you might ask, how do you protect yourself from someone stealing your identity?
The first step in identity theft prevention is to use common sense when it comes to divulging any personal information whether it be on the internet, on the phone or in person. Also, take care that any mail you get with personal information like banking or credit card statements are shredded since many thieves actually get this information out of the trash!
Another step to take in prevention is to sign the back of your credit card as "Check ID". This cues anyone who is using the card to check the ID of the person presenting it. If the identity thief does not have proper photo id with your name, then they can't make the purchase.
When using the ATM machine, you want to always be sure that you hide the keypad when you are punching in your PIN number.
Always keep your social security card in a safe place but not in your wallet! You don't want anyone to have access to this number and also be sure any information you get with your social security number on it is shredded.
When you are shopping online, always make sure the browser is secure and only use websites that offer secure transactions. Secure website pages will have an https in the front of the url as opposed to the regular http.
Make sure your computer is free of spyware or Trojan programs particularly ones that log keystroke information. You can buy any number of virus protection software as well as spyware monitoring and removal software programs today
Identity theft prevention is critical in todays world as the results can be devastating. Identity thieves can cost you buy going on spending sprees using your credit card, taking out auto loans and any number of other things. You should get a credit report periodically to check your credit and see if new accounts have been opened in your name.
