Ranked #56,687 in Education, #941,828 overall

If a poll was taken of the entire population of the United States, then it is estimated that over 90% would answer yes to the question, "If you learn martial arts, do you learn self-defense?" it is not uncommon to think that if a person were to learn martial arts, then he/she would also learn self-defense. Media has fueled this misconception over the many decades of movie heroes such as such as Jean Claude Van Damme and movies like "Karate Kid."

Stay in Shape

The fact of the matter is that to learn martial arts is a positive approach to staying in shape and learning focus and discipline. Most classes geared towards martial arts are taught in the sense that the training is for sport. In order to successfully use most karate techniques, it is necessary to practice over and over. This is one of the positive aspects to the training. The practice creates focus and is very good for training mentally and physically. The discipline is also a positive factor. The problem lies in the fact that many of the moves may be too difficult to pull off in a situation that creates a high level of stress. The more intricate the move, the less probable it will be that the move can actually be used, but also that it will successful in accomplishing the task that it is intended to do.

Tackling Dangerous Situatons

The society in which we live is not what we would ideally want it to be like. There are dangerous situations that occur for many people at on a daily basis. There are robberies and burglaries for drug money, there are rapes, there are muggings and many other violent crimes. Sadly, this is the reality of the world, and to deny that reality is to only shut yourself off from the possibility of something harmful happening to you. Your possibilities of becoming a victim increase greatly due to the fact that you may not be looking out for the signs of danger that are right in front of you. You may not be doing what you need to do to avoid a dangerous situation. You may not be doing all you can to be prepared for the problems that may occur if you are actually placed into a compromising position.
