Fun Facts About The Liver Could Save Your Life

If Your Liver Could Talk, Would It Say, "I Love You"? Here's a Clue: Your Diet

Liver health for me started with learning about the liver and its "reasons for being." A healthy liver is an expert at doing many tasks at once. This distinguishes it from many other body parts precisely because a liver is NOT a specialist, in the sense that like, say the heart is there to pump blood. Period.

But my liver, which is dependent on lifestyle healthy choices about food and environment, is the original multi-tasker. Your diet and mine are just the beginning if we want to know about the liver as a high-powered benefit to liver health. But, your diet, your liver and your environment are interrelated in ways I thought you'd like to know.

Chief among the startling facts I discuss on this page is that an unhealthy liver, one that is doomed to early death or life-threatening disease, is undetectable. Until it's too late.

As Charlie Brown would say, "Aauughh!!"

1. "As Your Liver, I Give You The Strength To Carry On"

If you thought learning about the liver was boring, think again! Liver health means my own personal storage cabinet

There are plenty of body parts and organs that could disappear and I would still have energy and strength enough for a full life.

However, robustness depends on iron, vitamins and minerals stored in our livers. My liver is a storage facility for many life-dependent ingredients. Besides being a "manufacturing plant" and synthesizer, it is a crucial keeper of things I have to have to survive and thrive.

The liver also stores glucose (in the form of glycogen), vitamin A (1-2 years' supply), vitamin D (1-4 months' supply), vitamin B12 (1-3 years' supply), iron, and copper which are key to the vigor I expect to have to do the things I love.

2. "Slang For Anger (?) Is A Fluid Made By Your Liver"

Hint: Liver health means this required substance for food digestion will be available to my stomach

Bile is that bitter greenish-brown alkaline fluid. Ick! Pooey! But, it's a digestion aid and secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder.

My! My! While my liver is storing iron it still has time to produce the means by which my tummy gets to do what it does best - and which I love for it to do - that is, cope with all those ice cream sundaes I send it. Digest, baby, digest and digest!

So, "e-bile is an email sent for the purpose of spewing anger, vitriol and complaint": urbandictionary.com

Cirrhosis of the Liver

Cirrhosis is when the liver slowly degenerates and stops working due to chronic physical trauma. Scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, partially blocking the flow of blood through the liver.

3. "Yes, You!" I'm Sure MY Liver Is Spared One Of Its Duties -

Which is to remove toxic substances or qualities from those traveling to a liver

Well, I was sure my liver never had to be bothered with taking the sting out of poisons.

After all, we're talking about my liver. Then, I found out that some of my habits where foods and beverages are concerned actually deliver poisonous elements into my very own liver.

My only liver. How rude!

4. "As Your Liver, I'm Your Battery"

Just like a great camera battery, or computer battery, livers store energy until you need it.

Our livers stockpile sugar and keeps the "blood sugar" at just the right level until we need it. Aww! that's so sweet!

This little gal - my liver - is a do-it-yourself storage unit for not only iron but one of its benefits made plain. Because it also stores vitamins and minerals until I need them, too. Without the storage capacity of my liver I'd fall faint on the floor.

Now that would be very inconvenient, don't you think!

5. "I Was Here First, You Know"

Before I was "me," my liver was helping to make my other body parts possible. One thing our livers might say if they could talk is, "I was here first, you know, making blood shortly after you were conceived so that you could be you."

About the Liver & Alcohol

For women, consuming two to three drinks-including beer and wine-per day and for men, three to four drinks per day, can lead to liver damage and cirrhosis. Source.

6. "I Provide Ongoing Creation of Lifegiving Proteins..."

What my liver started before I was born, continues today

Among the multiple functions of my liver, proper growth depends on it. This is an ongoing task, assigned to our livers, that starts before birth and continues throughout life.

Children who do not thrive with healthy bones, complexion and other signs of vitality are communicating with their appearance to anyone who is interested that their liver is impaired. The absence of healthy proteins that only the liver can produce is caused by too much alcohol, drugs and other destructive artifacts sent to our liver. In effect, we force our liver to break down by giving it these poisons so that it cannot do what it was intended to do by producing proteins.

7. "I Make Jelly!"

Only When Your Life Depends On It!

Accidental cuts, or even intentional ones, would cause me to bleed to death without a liver to send ingredients to my blood to turn it to jelly, or clots.

Blood clotting where injury occurs just means giving it a thick, sticky consistency between solid and liquid to impair the flow of otherwise free-flowing liquid.

8. "Thank Me If You Have Resistance To Infection"

When I make it through the flu and cold season free of illness, I might think next year about saying thanks to my liver.

That's right. This wonderful benefit of a healthy liver means I can actually enjoy a flu-free winter or a spring time without colds.

Infections from germs and other pesky intruders are best prevented by a healthy liver. When allowed to fulfill its purpose, our liver keeps us free of infections.

9. "May I Have A Word, Please?"

Quick tips you may not have known that you know, already

I need to scrutinize what I breathe. In addition to keeping alcohol, sugar and drugs to a minimum to avoid an over-burdened liver charged with the task of cleaning them up, dangerous substances can enter my body through my nose.

Aerosol sprays, non-aerosol spray of toxic mists, foams and fumes can be like a millstone around the neck of my liver. While it was meant to handle these things, I can keep them to rock bottom levels if I want my liver to be free for other live-sustaining pursuits.

If insecticides are in the air I should also protect my skin because poisons can enter through pores as well as through the lungs.

10. "I'm Your Silent Partner"

Like a true-blue silent partner, my liver does its job away from the limelight

It's entirely likely that I won't know until it's too late if my liver is in trouble. It does not act up and cause me to get sick if it is sick. At least not until it's too damaged for repair. No pain to provide alert signals. No vomiting or other warning signs. Nothing. Nada!

We don't have to be completely in the dark, though. Tests are also available to doctors who suspect there's a liver at risk.
