Thanks to the recent rise of smartphones and advanced technology, the days when IFR flight planning was a long and laborious process are now in the past. The app complements RocketRoute's online system, automating the process of IFR flight planning and providing the tools to allow pilots to arrange and modify fuel efficient routes from anywhere. The result of this is that more time can be spent in the air instead of wasted scanning through page after page of flight rules. Apps are available for iPhone, iPad, Nokia, Android and Blackberry products, and they allow pilots to cancel or delay flight plans up to 15 minutes after off-block time.

Using Your iPhone to Plan a Route

Once the app is downloaded you simply tap in a few details (the departure and destination airports, preferred flight level, minimum and maximum flight level and aircraft performance profile) and press submit. The app will then use the inputted information to calculate a route, taking account of weather conditions and routing restrictions, before filing and validating the route with Eurocontrol. The entire process takes less than a couple of minutes to complete, taking all the stress out of IFR flight planning. Once you're in the air, if you wish to cancel the flight plan you simply hit the 'landed' button. This is especially useful if you will be landing at a ZZZZ airport. If you find that you are stuck at any point operating the app, there is also a handy 'guide' button to help out and ensure that your mobile IFR flight planning goes off without a hitch.

Installing the IFR Flight Planning App on Your Phone

The free app can be found on the iTunes app store as per any other app and a free 14 day trial of RocketRoute's IFR flight planning service can taken on their website, www.RocketRoute.com. As well as iPhone, the app also allows IFR flight planning on to be conducted on Android, Blackberry and Nokia phones. It can be downloaded from the respecting app stores or accessed via a mobile optimised website. An iPad app is also available to download for free, which allows for members to view and store approach plates for thousands of airports in Europe. RocketRoute's app is undoubtedly one of the handiest and most effective ways to carry out your IFR flight planning.
