Insufficient Funds - Bringing Back The Versatile Rap

A couple of months ago I received a submission in my inbox to check out this group called Insufficient Funds. Although I didn't quite agree with the name and wondered why somebody would confess that over themselves, I peeped them out anyways. I'm pretty sure it has a deeper meaning behind it than what people perceive. I checked them out on their myspace page and I found myself really diggin' these dudes. They remind me of that ol' De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Bush Babies type group that can rip it in a comedic way but still get their point across to the masses. To me these cats are a fun group that can bring a lighter side to todays hip hop. When I went to their myspace page I peeped the very first song which is called "Low Budget to No Budget". This joint had me crackin' up. The hook goes,

"This is so wrong the way I got no cheddar to spend/I talk to bill collectors so much it's like we're best friends. When will it end? I think of it and start to get pissed/How will I ever get a woman with a budget like this?"

The whole song will have you crackin' up. But don't get it twisted, they're not glorifying being broke, they're just relating to the people that may have been down this road financially. They can also flip it on you and pour out their hearts to God through their emceeing skills, too. On their cut "Blows From The Advisary", they talk about how to stay focused and trust in God in times of going through a storm. So to me, these dudes are real balanced and I think they have a real good chance of leaving their mark in hip hop both Christian and secular.
