Igor The Movie: Storyline
The plot for the new animated film.
John Cusack leads an all-star voice cast featuring Jay Leno, Molly Shannon, John Cleese, Jeremy Piven, Steve Buscemi, and Jennifer Coolidge in this computer-animated comedy about a gifted scientist who happens to have been born with a most unfortunate deformity.
Igor (voice of Cusack) may have been born with a brilliant mind, but unfortunately everyone around him is too distracted by his pronounced hunchback to notice. Forced to serve as a lowly lab assistant to nefarious scientist Dr. Glickenstein (voice of Cleese), Igor longs for the day he will become a mad scientist, take top prize at the Evil Science Fair, and finally win the heart of village vixen Gretchen.
Every year, mad scientists from all of the local villages converge on Malaria to compete in the annual Evil Science Fair -- an event that always features an abundance of death rays, earthquake generators, and man-eating plants. This year, Igor's village manages to take the top prize, too. But despite the fact that his lab receives a substantial government reward, the king confiscates the invention to be used in Malaria's defense program.
Unlike the other Igors, this hunchbacked genius longs to change the world in ways his master could have never imagined, and when Dr. Glickenstein dies just two weeks before the latest Evil Science Fair, he seizes the opportunity to shine. Carefully covering up Dr. Glickenstein's death, Igor enlists the aid of angry brain-in-a-jar Brian and insecure re-animated rabbit Scamper to create an enormous, hideous creature of unparalleled strength.
Trouble arises, however, when the creature turns out to be a female monster with a heart of gold. Unable to comprehend the concept of evil, the creature believes that Igor has named her "Eva," and longs for the day she will become a respected actress. And with the Evil Science Fair drawing near, Igor has just two weeks to turn "Eva the sweetheart" into "Evil the rampaging nightmare!"
Now, in order to win the competition, Igor works tirelessly to convince Eva that the Evil Science Fair is actually an audition for a twisted stage version of Annie, and that in order to win the lead role she must immerse herself in the evil character and never reveal her inner goodness. But as the "rehearsals" get underway, the nosy villagers come snooping around the castle, the malevolent Dr. Schadenfreude schemes to claim Eva as his own, and Igor slowly starts falling in love with his creation while realizing that life as a mad scientist may not be so glamorous after all.

Ok, so this movie isn't as great as Kung Fu Panda, however, I really liked it. Not sure why the critics disliked it so much. Yes, it could have been better, but so could most movies. It was funny in its own right. Now I would also like to add that some critics stated the jokes were too "adult" for kids, but that's not true! Kids react to what's on screen and laugh to the actions of the animation, whether or not they fully understand the story or not. Many children in the theater were laughing, so I didn't see any evidence of kids not "getting it." I recommend this movie. :)

Igor Cast of Characters
Discover the funny characters that Igor is surrounded with.
IGOR
A potentially gifted and brilliant scientist, Igor was born with a hunch on his back which, in Malaria, leaves him with only one choice in life - to become an Igor. Forced to serve a cruel scientist named Dr. Glickenstein, Igor must invent in secret, always afraid of being discovered. When fate finally steps in and gives Igor the chance to build his greatest invention - an evil monster that will win the Annual Evil Science Fair and bring Igor the respect he has always wanted - something goes horribly wrong. His evil invention does not want to be evil; she wants to be an actress! Now he has to figure out a way to get her to compete in the Annual Evil Science Fair and battle Malaria's other evil inventions, or it's down the recycling chute for him.
EVA
Igor's latest creation is his tour de force - Eva. A giant monster built for one purpose - to be the best evil invention and conquer all at the Evil Science Fair. Just one hitch - she doesn't have an evil bone in her body. Worse, all she wants is to be an actress. She thinks, breathes and eats acting, and believes she would be perfect for the title role in Malaria's new production of "Annie".
JACLYN
As Dr. Schadenfreude's sexy and vain girlfriend, Jaclyn is determined to get a fast ticket to Evil Street. Year after year she helps him win the Evil Science Fair by utilizing her beguiling ways to 'acquire' the other scientists' inventions - okay, stealing them. She is his confidante and, at the same time, a thorn in his side.
SCAMPER
One of Igor's first experiments, Scamper is a 'road kill' rabbit that he brought back to life. Igor gave him super-intelligence and immortality, but Scamper doesn't see the point in living. he's always trying to end his meaningless existence but can't - he just keeps coming back to life again and again and again. However, by the end story, Scamper discovers that life is truly worth living.
BRAIN
Brain is another of Igor's inventions - a very early prototype. This brain-in-a-jar is anything but! Let's just say that this jar is more than half empty. He is always trying to prove that he is very intelligent and can help, but unwittingly ends up making life even tougher for our hero.
KING MALBERT
King Malbert , the King of Malaria rule justly and wisely - NOT. He is everyone's friend and cares about his people greatly...or that is what he would have you think. It was the King's idea to blackmail the world with weapons of destruction and he has convinced Malaria that it's good for their economy and so by doing Evil, they are actually doing good. Is it any surprise that this conniving politician isn't always telling the truth?
DR. GLICKENSTEIN
Igor's master, Dr. Glickenstein is a cruel Evil Scientist who treats Igor like dirt. Every year Dr. Glickenstein manages to lose the Annual Evil Science Fair and takes it out on poor Igor. When Dr. Glickenstein discovers that Igor has been creating his own inventions, he attempts to stop him once and for all, but in doing so sets his own demise in motion.
DR. SCHADENFREUDE
Dr. Schadenfreude is Malaria's most preeminent Evil Scientist, having won 17 Annual Evil Science Fairs in a row. Little does anyone realize that he can't invent his way out of a paper bag and that each year he steals his winning inventions from other Evil Scientists in the Kingdom - talking the credit and the coveted first prize. But winning the Evil Science Fair isn't enough anymore, and now he has his eyes on the throne and manipulates Eva into helping him get there.
The History of Igor
Igor has been a large part of the horror genre for many years in books and film. Let us take a look back to where it all began.
Igor - Through the Years
A brief history about the famous cliché hunch-backed assistant.
Igor Manic or Ygor is the traditional stock character or cliché hunch-backed assistant or butler to many types of villain, such as Count Dracula or a mad scientist, familiar from many horror movies and horror movie parodies, the Frankenstein series and Van Helsing films in particular.
An early representation in film is Dwight Frye's original hunch-backed lab assistant in the first film of the Frankenstein series (1931), though this character was actually named "Fritz". The sequels Son of Frankenstein (1939) and The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942) featured a character named "Ygor", played by Bela Lugosi; this character, however, is neither a hunchback nor a lab assistant, but an insane broken-necked blacksmith who reanimates the Monster as an instrument of vengeance against the townspeople who attempted to hang him for graverobbing.
In the 1933 horror classic "Mystery of the Wax Museum," Ivan Igor is the name of the mad wax museum curator. The film was remade as House of Wax in 1953 but interestingly the name "Igor" was given to a henchman of the curator (played by a young Charles Bronson) rather than the curator himself. While not a hunchback, the "Igor" character in House of Wax is deaf and mute and is portrayed as an unconditionally devoted servant.
Mel Brooks's 1974 parody of the genre, Young Frankenstein, put a comedic spin on the character with a hunchbacked assistant (played by Marty Feldman) whose name was pronounced, "Eye-gor". In 2004 Igor returned to the screen in Universal Studios' big-budget monster movie Van Helsing.
In 1975, writer/actor Richard O'brien wrote the cult classic, "Rocky Horror Picture Show" whereby Richard himself played a character named Riff Raff, which was based on the traditional stock character of Igor.
Now in 2008, Igor is taking on another genre... a computer animated comedy film that views the legendary stock character "Igor" in a more satirical direction. The cast includes John Cusack, Sean Hayes, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Eddie Izzard, Paul Vogt, and Molly Shannon. The plot revolves around Igor (voiced by Cusack) and his dreams of winning first place at the Evil Science Fair. The movie opens September 19, 2008.
