iguana and iguana cages

I love my iguana (my dad thinks its his but it's mine really) but I know they take a lot of care and they aren't for everybody. But iguanas are so rewarding if you look after them. I've spent some time looking for a new cage for zumo (my iguana) so I thought I'd share what I've found with people (with my Dads help who is doing all the typing).

Why Iguanas are great

Want to know whats great about owning an iguana. Here are my top three reasons.
  1. Believe it or not, iguana like people. They like to be picked up and stroked. They're big softies really.
  2. Iguana are easy to maintain. Sure they have health issues and require a lot of attention but as far as the daily maintenance of an iguana - it's easy.
  3. They are easy to feed. Despite an iguana's quite scary appearance they are herbivores so anything green and they'll eat it. Although mine won't touch spinach for some reason.

building your own iguana cage or enclosure

My dad is very clever and spent a lot of time building a home for zumo. In the end he got too big for it and my dad took me to buy a nice new home for him. But my dad thinks I should tell you a bit about how he made an iguana cage. He says that the important thing to remember when making an iguana cage is that iguana can grow quite big and fill out the cage quite quickly. I know zumo grew very quickly. Although they are called iguana cages they should be made to feel trapped. Iguana need room to move around and be comfortable. The iguana tail needs to be able to fully extend.

My dad says that it is important to make your iguana cage nice for your pet iguana and that they normally live outdoors so you want to make them feel like they still are. He says that some people shut iguana away in a cupboard but thats not very nice. He likes to make sure my iguana has a nice view.

Iguana have cold blood and need to warm up each day which is why my dad had to put a heater in there to keep it warm and a big rock that my iguana likes to lay on under the lamp. Zumo spends a lot of time there. My dad has to make sure that the temperature is just right or iguana can get sick.

I can tell my iguana likes his cage because he is always happy and sometimes when we let him out he goes back into his cage.

When buying or building an iguana cage always make sure it is a comfortable place for your iguana to live.

iguana cages

I'm not sure where to start with this. My Dad is typing as I speak and it's putting me off. Iguana cages are quite varied with lots of different sizes and styles. I decided (or my Dad did) that my iguana needed a bit more room as he has grown a bit since we first got him. We looked online for iguana cages and there were a lot to choose from but it's so hard to tell what the cage is really like without seeing it for real.

My dad took me to a big pet supply store (it was a long drive) but they had a few cages (they called them terrariums) and one of the cages was so big I don't think we could have fitted it in our house. They wanted over a thousand dollars for that so we said no (or my dad did).

We found a website that said it would show you how to build an iguana cage but you had to buy the book which was a lot of money so again my dad said no.

I am still looking for a new iguana cage for zumo and will write again when I have more to tell you.

cleaning the iguana cage

Yuck! My dad said that as I was writing about my iguana that I should start cleaning its cage more and caring for zumo instead of watching him do it all the time. Well, as much as I love my iguana I have to say I didn't enjoy cleaning his cage one little bit. My dad had this special stuff he uses to clean it and I had to pick up zumo's poo and flakes of skin and then cleaned the little ladder and the rock my iguana lays on to get warm. It took me about an hour and my dad says it should be done every day. Not even he does that so why should I? I know picking up zumos iguana poo should be done every day because who wants to have their poo laying around on the floor! But why the iguana cage should be cleaned every day is beyond me.

Still learning about iguanas

Okay, so my dad managed to get me to clear out my iguanas cage and yes, it was just as disgusting as I thought it would be. My dad even said that zumo (my iguana) has a wee in his water bowl and then drinks it but I think my dad was just trying to make me feel sick and he did.

I don't think zumo liked me cleaning his cage. At least that's what I am telling my dad. But I really think zumo was looking at me funny when I was doing it. Maybe he just wanted to make sure I was doing a good job. I hope I did. He seems happy enough. But why would an animal that wee wees in water and then drinks it care if his cage is a bit messy. They are funny animals.
