About Iguanas

A pet or a companion

Iguanas are wonderful pets, but make excellent companions too! Before buying an Iguana you need to read ALL you can find on them. Alot of pet shops will tell you they don't bite. That's what we were told.Ha what a lie! It's a good thing I didn't get bit right away, because it took time to adjust to the little dinosaur. And thus falling in love with them. They do bite and scratch and whip with their tails! All of these things hurt, not gonna lie. I want your eyes to be totally open,so you can make the right decision. You have to clip their nails regularly.(Still get scratched). Thus to sum this up Iguana's have good and bad qualities. You need to do your research before getting an Iguana.
You also need to consider the cost of a proper habitat for the Iguana.Which includes a hiding spot, proper lighting,a heat source, temperature and humidity guages and some sort of climbing for them... All these items cost way more than the Iguana itself, but are necessities for owning an Iguana.Iguanas need 12-14 hours of daylight(UVB,full spectrum fluorescent lights...and natural light)and 10-12 hours of darkness every day.Iguanas should be exposed to full sunlight at least an half hour a day. It is also very important to know the difference between male and female Iguanas. As the male can become extremely aggressive during their breeding season. And the female can become egg- bound, thus creating a medical problem, even can cause death. So the female Iguana needs a nesting box, whether or not there is a male present. My female Iguana layed twenty-one eggs.I even made my own Incubator in case her eggs were fertile.(Unfortunitly they weren't)

Feeding your Iguana

Lettuce alone is not a good option,it has no real food value. There's some good products out there on the market, that have proper food values for the Iguana. For awhile I would fix up a gourmet platter for my Iguanas,banana,strawberries,lettuce,carrots,vegetables...they were in Heaven! I found pellets were the easiest to use for my Iguanas. They store easily and don't need refrigeration or spoil easily. Although I occasionally used moist food, that did need refrigeration. As my Iguanas loved that stuff,it had all kinds of good things in it,flowers...Both of these products can be found at most stores that sell Iguanas. Or you could order them on line. I ordered mine directly from the manufactor in bulk. I saved alot of money that way. Iguanas love to go outdoors and eat grass and dandelions...Of course going outdoors requires a good leash.Don't be fooled by your Iguana moving slowly or not at all, outdoors!Because faster than you know it,they're gone! They move fast when they want to.And they love running on grass and climbing trees. You can't let them get too far up a tree,or you're going a climbing.

Green Iguanas

can and will reach 5 to 6 feet and weigh up to 18 pounds. There is a reason that many are calling them "Giant Green Iguanas".

What are your favorite things to do with your Iguana?

Everything!

I have always enjoyed holding and petting my Iguanas. And loved to watch them swim,in the bathtub. There they will deficate, then can roam the house without deficating all over.I really enjoyed taking them on trips and camping! They loved to sunbathe on the dashboard. The looks I got from others were priceless!I liked to put them on leashes, they would take me on a walk/run!My Iguanas have been more a companion than a pet!
