I Heart Zines
What is a zine?...pronounced 'zeen' like maga 'zine'.
A zine is a self-published magazine. Zines can be about anything. Your life thus far, your art, your favorite artist, your collection of poetry, short stories, a personal incident, how-to projects, your travels, the birth of your kids, your favorite shoes, the history of coin collecting, clouds, your favorite cookie recipes, your rock collection, ......anything. There are so many great artists and writers out there who self publish their work. Follow the links below and give them a try. I mostly read art zines and some perzines (personal zines), but you can find zines about every subject matter imaginable.
Basically, if you have something to say, you can say it in a zine.
If you have something to share, you can share it in the form of a zine. That is why I Heart Zines.

Zines are not an underground literary/artmovement.....at least not any more.
Zines are extremely popular these days, so popular that Barnes and Noble's top selling art magazine Somerset Studio has been featuring zines for a few years now.
Check out the September/October 2006 issue, where my zine The Fabric Arts Zine was featured. How GREAT is that.
tO CrEaTe a ZiNe YOu nEEd tO...
- Think of a theme or set of themes.
Be organized. - Respect copy written art and material.
come up with original art and projects. This is a great opportunity for you to challenge your creativity. - If creating an art zine, you might want to include a little something in your zine....for example....beads, fabrics or ephemera.
- Print and assemble enough zines to sell....or to swap out with other artists, or send to your family and friends.
- Always include your name, (c) copyright year and contact information in the zine. I can't tell you how many times I have nearly forgotten to do that.
- Come up with a title.
The title can come before or after you have created the zine. Think of a title that reflects you and your zine. - Use what you have.
Think about how you can construct the zine? What computer program do you have? Will you be typing or hand writing your content. Will you create the zine in a cut and paste style or will you create all the pages on the computer?
Maybe you can include a little bit of all formats.
These are things you may want to think about.
How big will the zine be? How many pages? etc....

creating a cut and paste style zines
Supplies:*cardstock
*double-sided tape
*written or typed content
*pictures or altered images from magazines to further ornament the page.
*printer
*stapler (or book binding tool of choice)
To create my 40 page zine, I work on a basic word processing program on my computer. I start by typing out all the content.....the projects, stories and how-to instructions.
Once that is done, I create interesting collage-like pages on the front and back side of ten 8.5 x 11 card stock pages. These pages become the background for the zine.
I tape all the images with double-sided tape onto the background.
I make sure all my content is in a fun and yet readable font and font size.
I make sure that it will fit on my background pages.
I then print out the contents on my ink jet printer.
I cut the text out and tape it on the background.
I tape additional images to further embellish the background pages.
I assemble all my pages in this manner and I make sure that I number the pages.
I include my name and contact information somewhere in the zine. Then I take it to my local print shop and print it using the double sided feature on the printer.
I usually print a few pages in color. It adds more visual interest to the zine.
I fold and assemble it. Bind it either by machine stitching it, hand bind it with a strong thread, or staple it using my long arm stapler.
That is how I go about constructing my zines

My latest zine called soulcraft is also created in a cut and paste style.

- nice lens -- great links. The only tips I have would be to add more images (or a variety of modules) and maybe to skip the alternating capital/lowercase letters (I've noticed people tend to not take the author as seriously, even if you have good content!). Thanks for all of the tips! I am looking to create my own zine too.
4 stars and a favorite!
