    Hi,

Can I change the runners on the IKEA kitchen drawers so that the auto close function is off? I have a push to open mechanism but it's not strong enough to push against the auto close runner
  • kevinw1 Apr 22, 2012 @ 11:18 am | delete
I don't know the answer to that one! I suggest you ask over on the IKEAfans forums at http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/ and someone there will know.

I want the interior of the cabinets to match the doors....can this be done if it isn't white?
  • ikeagromit Mar 25, 2012 @ 11:11 pm | delete
At IKEA...No. The exterior can be completed in the same color and style however, the interiors are ALWAYS birch or white. IKEA has recently added a small range of black cabinets (that are closest in color to the RAMSJO brown-black). However they only come in four wall cabinet sizes: 15x30, 15x39, 18x30, or 18x39...

how do you remove an Ikea kitchen drawer
  • debbies21 Oct 16, 2011 @ 10:28 am | delete
we painted the outside of ikea kitchen cabinets that we've had in our laundry room for along time. They are hung on a track. We re-hung them and now the shlef doesn't fit unless we push out the back of the cabinet. My husband thinks its a shelf issue, i think we didn't rehang it correctly.

    any suggestions.

Can you tell me please how to get the door to my Ikea base kitchen corner cabinet to fit? I've tried adjusting the screws and just made everything worse. The door won't close. The two faces of the folding door butt into one another and into the door frame. I think the problem is that the door itself is out of alignment with the door to the next ikea cabinet. The two cabinet doors are close together at the bottom, but half an inch apart at the top. I think this is why there isn’t enough space for everything else to fit together. Can you please tell me how to get everything into adjustment? I have no idea where to go to get advice. Thankyou
  • kevinw1 Oct 5, 2011 @ 11:18 pm | delete
Hi Nicola, it sounds like you are on the track with adjusting the hinges, but it can be hard to get the right screw going the right way to make it do what you want it to do! I suggest you take some photos of the problem area and head over to the Assembly and Installation forum at IKEAFans:
    http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/assembly-installation/
Ask your question there, with a picture or two, and you'll get good help.

I always worry about IKEA making thigns which fall apart. Or perhaps that is just my putting them together...
  • kevinw1 Oct 5, 2011 @ 11:19 pm | delete
I have IKEA stuff from 30 years ago which is still going strong, so I'm quite impressed with the sturdiness :)

    Fantastic and great lens.

Excellent Lens - I've always loved Ikea's products, never knew how purchasing things like cabinets and such worked, though.

Another option, for custom doors for IKEA kitchens, is Semihandmade - hand-picked veneers, laminates, even reclaimed materials, all pre-drilled to IKEA specs.

Can I install ikea boxes, but install drawer fronts and drawers from a different manufacturer?
  • kevinw1 Jan 15, 2011 @ 10:23 am | delete
Yes, provided you can get them the exact right size. Scherr's (http://www.scherrs.com/) is a custom door maker who are very experienced with making doors for IKEA boxes.

When installing free-standing cabinets from IKEA, is it possible to cover the bottom perimeter of the base cabinets with a toe-kick? Do they provide toe-kick sets as an option when ordering?
  • kevinw1 Jan 4, 2011 @ 1:06 pm | delete
Yes, IKEA sells toekicks that go with the cabinets. They clip onto the legs that the base cabinets sit on.

how do I remove an ikea kitchen drawer front
  • ikeauser Feb 4, 2010 @ 10:34 pm | delete
installed ikea cabinets in rental. the finish on the boxes and panels looks very thin and one of the lazy susan pieces arrived with a chip on it. too late to return as it's installed. Ikea does not make matching paint.. any suggestions on how to fix the chip and prevent damage that tenants will eventually cause? we installed the basic white cabinets and boxes
  • kevinw1 Feb 4, 2010 @ 11:46 pm | delete
If the chip is on a door or drawer front that you can remove without taking apart the whole cabinet, you still might be able to get it replaced. If not, consider trying iron-on edging, or a really strong epoxy-type paint.
  • ikeauser Feb 4, 2010 @ 11:49 pm | delete
Hi Kevin.. it's on the corner of the lazy susan that slide out in the blind cabinet. I wish Ikea made paint to match the boxes and cabinet drawers. Last time my husband made a return, he got hassled about some of the boxes that weren't in pristine shape and was told that once a product is installed there is no return.
  • kevinw1 Feb 5, 2010 @ 4:05 pm | delete
If you still have the chip, or if you can remove a part with the same finish, most paint stores can mix you a paint to match. Just buy the toughest paint you can get.

Yes, you can get corner base cabinets of two types, either blind-corner, or "around the corner" with a lazy susan inside. See them on this page (near the bottom):

  • ScottG May 23, 2009 @ 10:52 am | delete
Does Ikea have any blind cabinets for a corner.
  • Ikeauser Feb 4, 2010 @ 10:32 pm | delete
yes and they offer lazy susan type inserts that make climbing into the blind cabinet to fetch a lost pan obsolete.

    Hi Eric,

You might try the commercial arm of IKEA, "IKEA Business" at
    http://business.ikea.com/Ikea/siteshell/startup.html#,en;frontpage

Either they or the IKEA head office might be able to give you a more definitive answer than your local store.
  • eric coyle Dec 12, 2008 @ 1:24 am | delete
I have a client who wamts to install ikea kitchen and bathroom cabinets in rental units. My local store says that the various warranties are valid for the original purchaser, but my life experience is that most "home-owner" type warranties are simply voided by commercial use, which these rental units would be.

How could a contractor facilitate provision of any warranties in such a case?

: Yes, IKEA does sell doors and drawer fronts separately - I emailed them to ask specifically, since I couldn't find the answer anywhere, and they told me yes. If your original cabinets are IKEA then you shouldn't have any trouble getting doors the right size, but if they aren't, you need to do some careful measuring to see if you can fit the IKEA doors to them.
  • makmack Nov 25, 2008 @ 9:06 am | delete
I like the layout of my kitchen, but it needs to be up dated. The cabinets are only 6 yrs old but the original owners choose a hideous color. my qeuotion is, does IKEA just sell fronts and doors so I can keep the base of the cabinets, or do I have to start from scratch?
  • kevinw1 Jul 18, 2008 @ 5:14 pm | delete
Depends... what are they made of? Most likely answer is that you use some kind of cover strip to cover the join.
