Illuminated Keyboard

The primary reason people prefer an illuminated keyboard is it's ease of use in low light situations. It allows you to work (or play) late at night without having to turn on the lights. This keeps the disturbance to others at a minimum, holds down costs associated with electricity usage, and can even reduce glare and eye strain.

Of course these keyboards can also be good in professional settings, particularly when trying to do a presentation in a darkened room.

Obviously when you're in the process of choosing an illuminated keyboard, you need to consider the overall functionality of the keyboard and it's suitability for your situation and needs.

The keyboard layout, ergonomics, and so forth will be important. Some keyboards allow you to adjust the height and angle and some have adjustable wrist rests. If you're a gamer, then programmable keys, a gaming mode and so forth will be important.

While most of these keyboards are wired, some do offer wireless connectivity and can eliminate a lot of clutter. Others, may offer channels for taking control of where cables run and keep them organized and out of your way.

As far as the illumination itself, there are just a few features to consider. Some offer a fully illuminated keyboard, but most offer backlit keys. The primary advantage of having backlit keys only, is that there is less light being thrown out. Some keyboards offer backlit characters, this means there is even less excess light as there is none escaping from around the key itself.

Many of these illuminated keyboards offer adjustable lighting, but not all of them do. Being able to adjust lighting to your personal level of comfort can be important. Some have 2 levels of adjustment and some 3. Some provide a white backlight, some blue, and others red. Some offer a variety of colors from which to choose or perhaps 2 different colors for different areas of the keyboard.
