An Introduction into Collecting Illustration Art

Welcome to the world of Illustration Art Collecting. An illustrator is a graphic artist who creates a picture or illustration for book covers, or pages in a book. In decades of the past the illustrator was also used to illustrate greeting cards, magazine covers, articles within a magazine, newspapers, and advertisements.

Computers and photography have changed the look of most of these mediums in our current society. The graphic artists of the past used their own styles and created some truly remarkable pieces of art that people enjoy collecting today.

Most people are familiar with Norman Rockwell who illustrated many of the covers for the Saturday Evening Post and advertisements for Crest Toothpaste along with other product advertisements. The seasoned collector of illustration art goes beyond Rockwell and collects other artists who were just as talented but didn't have the marketing savvy of Rockwell.

My Senior Squids group challenge for this week was to create a lens about Art. Follow me as I introduce you to some very talented and collectible illustration artists from the past.

Forms of Illustration Art

Every collection has a beginning and it is sometimes mind boggling as to where to start. To begin with I would recommend deciding which form of illustration art you would like your collection to be based from. As you become more knowledgeable, your tastes will change and you may find that you will only want to collect a specific artist. That is the fun of it, you get to decide!

Types of Illustrators:
Illustrators of Books and Book Covers
Magazine Cover Illustrators
Advertising Illustrators
Sheet Music Cover Illustrators
Greeting Card Illustrators
Postcard Illustrators
Record Album Illustrators
Comic Book Illustrators

I'm sure if you think about it there are others too. It is easiest to begin small and choose one type to look for. However, some magazine cover illustrator/artists also were hired to do advertising, books, and other mediums. In that case it will be easy to branch out as your collection grows. This picture comes from the cover of a 1935 issue of Womans Home Companion and was illustrated by Maud Tousey Fangel.
