Gardening on Squidoo is a fun way to learn and share

Since gardening is the hobby which I have spent the most time on, in both writing about it and spending lots of years in the actual pursuit of it, it is not surprising that I have a growing set of lenses centered on the garden. I present them to you and hope you like them.

Isn't my gardening squid cute? I put her together in Photoshop. You can borrow her if you like.

I am really excited about putting together a number of gardening lenses into a group- I have a start on it, but gardening is one of those hobbies where there is just so much to know. It is truly a lifelong adventure.

One of my garden lenses won the LOTD. This is like getting the blue ribbon at the fair, and it was so much fun to see all the comments and get so many new visitors. Go and look at the Garden to see in Ohio, and find out more about gardens to visit in Ohio. What the Great HQ Squids had to say about it.

My Garden Lenses

Love of a garden grows into lenscrafting

To follow the record of my Squid Journey, I am notating things learned and the most helpful lenses. The most popular lenses so far are those about gardens and bouquets of flowers, more than making a garden. I'd love to hear feedback on what you readers are looking for in gardening lenses ( leave a comment and let me know). If you aren't a member here- it's free to join and I encourage you to try it.

How to Write About Gardening

Get a Camera, Open a Blog, Start Writing

Blog My Garden shirt

Most garden writing is "how-to" essay writing. It is largely non-fiction, although some of the best writers do use a story telling style as they describe their activities or what impressions nature makes on their lives. The format of "How to grow" or "5 Tips to..." "10 Plants..." etc. also work well.

Try to visualize your audience. Is it a new gardener, or someone who is experienced and wants something new?

I personally do not like highly hyped garden writing, which is common in the genre. Not everything is easy, beautiful, or must-have in gardening. In fact, gardening is a highly individual occupation, with a range of tastes in what is considered ideal both in in style and method. Hype sells more, but restraint and valuable information educates leading to the success of the reader and the future cultivation of the hobby.

Anyone can have a beautiful garden that functions well for their family with all the planning helps and online tutorials that are available. I really believe that. It only requires taking the time to watch some videos and read some articles before you are ready to face the challenges and choices of making a garden.

Now, mind you, I;m not saying it is easy... or even simple, but it is easy and simple to start. And those first steps are supported with expert advice that is as close as your iPhone or PC to support you along the way.

The great thing about nature is that it wants to grow and thrive. So you are bound to have a number of successes. Failures are just learning opportunities, anyway. Write about both your successes and your failures; they both make interesting reading material.

I write lots of things about gardening

so there are more articles on garden reading and planning

Starting with the love of reading gardening books, and my obsession with gardening, it was only natural to start writing about gardening when I started making a personal website...

That led to blogging, and finally, to Squidoo. A lens about my garden site was my first attempt at writing on Squidoo. Most gardeners like to share. They pass along plants, freely dole out advice, and love to hang out and talk about their latest plant acquisitions. When they talk about the weather they are serious about it!

It is so much fun for me to share whatever I come to know about the art and science of gardening. I hope it is fun for you to read, as well.

About Gardens

gardens to visit and learn from

The greatest inspiration is to visit a garden. It is calming, exciting, and educating all at once. Gardens are my favorite place to be -next to being on a beach by the ocean, that is- and if I can find a seaside garden that would be about perfection for me. I'd like to share this love with you, and let you know about gardens to visit - virtually if not physically!

The "Gardens to see in Ohio" gives lots of such places to visit in my state. And I found one of those perfect little seaside gardens you can visit, too, "Pickets, in Seagrove, Florida". It was a little shop attached to the prettiest garden... right hear Destin on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

I don't so much like gardening since it is a lot of work. I just love the end result. I have a small paradise in my back yard that i am proud of. Flowers, Koi fish pond, gazeebo.I enjoy it soo much! it feels like I'm living in another world when i sit out there. Enjoyed your Lens very much, thank you.

Awesome. I love to garden lots myself and have two lenses on my organic food gardens. Keep up the great work and keep those hands dirty!

Offically Squidlicious "About Me"

Squidoo is a fun place to share the love of gardening, not the least because of opportunities to talk up the new tools or garden gear available. Gardeners are a different breed, aren't they? When we get together to talk about the latest shoes, we are talking about wellies or sloggers or muckboots... not Manolo Blahnik heels. (although just for laughs I'll include a module for them- for closet fashionistas in the gardening crowd)

unless you are me and can't wear heels anymore....

I just stuck this in here, remembering long ago when I did wear high heels and couldn't resist going out to just do a bit of weeding while in them. My heels would sink into the dirt, but I didn't care.

If I wore Manolo's I probably would have cared more... LOL!

This is the best book for any gardener interested in growing perennials ( which we should be if we own a home with a yard!). It is thorough, well written, and expert. You can grow exciting plantings that require less care than the lawn or annual beds, which is the usual choice for landscapes. Make your yard stand out-this book will help you.
