Swimming Myths

Its amazing what people think about swimming

I am astounded by some of the swimming myths that are still being retold and retold as gospel. Here are some highlights and the truth about them.

1. You can't lose weight by swimming!
This is just NOT true! Like any other aerobic exercise, swimming burns a significant number of calories. You can burn between 400 and 700 calories and hour depending on your weight and your workout. If you are just going to wade around in the pool, you probably won't burn much.

2.Don't eat within two hours of swimming. You will certainly cramp!

TWO HOURS! I hope you haven't tried training on an empty stomach. Twenty - Thirty minutes is a good waiting time. If less, you probably won't cramp, you will probably vomit in the pool, which is (using a technical term) just plain yukky!

3. If you urinate in the pool it turns purple because of a special dye.
This is an oldy and goody and can be classified as an urban legend! There is simply no such product!

4. Black people can't learn to swim - its genetic, their bodies sink.
This myth should have died a good death long long ago. Tell this to Tanica Jamison, 2003 graduate from the University of Texas and is in the movie The Guardian

I've loved to swim since I was 7 years old, but I never swam competitively except briefly on a Masters team. Maybe I'll get back into it someday. I love the ocean too. Great lens. Thanks!
