Image and video skills are not hard to learn...

I love working with images and know you will too once you have the right software and a few simple instructions. This lens lists a lot of sites where you can find free images on the web.

This lens also offers help with videos - where to find them and how to place them on your Squidoo lens.

At the end of the page you'll find information about making your own videos for the web.

Image file formats used on the web

There are five file formats used on the web: GIF, JPG, PNG, SVG, and WebCGM.

Good News: At Squidoo the only ones you need to use are GIF or JPG.

The other three file formats are much less frequently used on the web. The only way to use them on Squidoo is to save the image file on another server and link to them there. This is because Squidoo accepts only GIF or JPG uploads.

For a technical discussion of each of the five graphic formats, go to Graphics on the Web for more information.

  1. GIF - Graphics Interchange Format - this is best for images that have less than 256 colors. It is not good for photographs.

  2. JPG - Joint Photographic Experts Group - this is best for photographs and for drawings using a variety of shades because it allows an increased color spectrum.

  3. PNG - Portable Network Graphics

  4. SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics

  5. WebCGM - Web Computer Graphics Metafile

Squidoo image modules

Here are some Squidoo modules you can add images to:

  1. The Intro Module - Always, always, always add an image to your intro module!

  2. The Polaroid Module - a nice big photo in what looks like a Polaroid photograph frame.

  3. The Text Module - you can upload a small image, or link to a larger one using the codes below.

  4. Text With BIG Picture - exactly like the Text Module, but a larger picture can be uploaded.

  5. The Flickr Module - you can upload your photos to Flickr and then share them here with this module.

  6. The Flickr Voting Plexo - upload photos to Flickr and let people vote on them!

  7. Photo Gallery - upload multiple images to your lens and display as a gallery.

  8. SlideShare - create a Power Point presentation (or use FREE Open Office Impress,) upload it to SlideShare and then import it to your lens.

How to link to an image file hosted on your own server

Here's the basic HTML code for linking to a graphics file hosted on your server:

<img src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" />

Now let's get fancy with this!

  1. If you know the exact dimensions (in pixels) of your image, you can specify that in your link:

    <img src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" width="200" height="150" />

  2. You should add an "alt" attribute because it contributes to the search engine optimization of your lens, and because technically, in XHTML (the most recent standard) alt attributes should be used:

    <img src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" width="200" height="150" alt="Describe Your Photo Here" />

  3. Let's say you want your image to cling to the right side of the module. You'll need to add an "align" attribute. You should also add "hspace" and "vspace" attributes to put a little space between your image and the words that surround it:

    <img src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" width="200" height="150" alt="Describe Your Photo" align="right" hspace="4" vspace="4" />

  4. If you're going to use this image as a link, you will put an anchor tag around the whole thing:

    <a href="http://www.yoursite.com" title="Describe Your Site"><img src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" width="200" height="150" alt="Describe Your Photo" align="right" hspace="4" vspace="4" border="0" /></a>

  5. If you want no borders use the "border" attribute in your image tag:

    <img src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" width="200" height="150" alt="Describe Your Photo" align="right" hspace="4" vspace="4" border="0" />

  6. If you want a colored border around the image, add a bit of in-line CSS code:

    <img style="border:2px solid #ff0000;" src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" width="200" height="150" alt="Describe Your Photo" align="right" hspace="4" vspace="4" border="0" />

Graphic design and photography

First, a word about resolution - what is it? - what should it be?

Pixels per inch (PPI) refers to the display resolution of the image.

The best PPI setting for a web image is 72 ppi.

If you were using the same image in print, you would use 300 ppi.

If you have no idea what PPI is, please don't worry about it. If you're using a high-end graphics program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, you'll find this setting in your software. I use Paint Shop Pro and find the setting in the image sizing box.

A very useful lens! I was wondering, what is the position for using CC images in a video (I want to use 10). Do they all have to be individually acknowledged on screen or can viewers be alerted to one link which contains the 10 different URLs?

I am so grateful for all this information you have posted in one handy-dandy page. Of course, beginners should not worry about "quirky and quippy." But after having created a couple dozen lenses, I'm ready to broaden my horizons. That, sweetie, is where this kind of information becomes appreciable. And I do appreciate the time and effort it took to create this lens. I used it once a few minutes ago, and you can bet your bootie I'll be back to use the info again and again. Thanks bunches.

The question I have - is about your help information on Squid.
It needs to be straightforward, rather than a sales pitch for everything out there.
And, to hold up beginner lens forever using wip or whatever reason is very discouraging to a newbie. My impression of squidoo right now is pretty low - it takes much too much time for the lens to appear, and then the rating and ranking gets in the way of anyone ever seeing what others might thinks is a perfectly good lens. That's my opinion, for what it is worth. Every line and paragraph does not have to be quirky and quippy. Plain english is fine when people are just looking for a help menu that performs. And if it takes forever to get a lens out of the "in progress" mode, then how can we publish anything that will be current? If there are any real people out there, please respond. Please do not just refer me to more forums, and 25 lists of where to search for a help topic.

I agree, sales pitches don't work as well as friend-making and providing useful information people will enjoy reading. I don't know why a beginner lens would be held up... I've always had my lenses post right away, except with my EFT lens that triggered Squidoo spam filters.

My impression of Squidoo is high, because it provides a huge chunk of income for me. Stick with it and you'll probably start earning money here too. The more lenses you produce, the better your chances will be. Quality is important. Good luck!

    LindaJM Apr 27, 2011 @ 12:15 pm | delete
No, the images should be showing now. Make sure you used .gif or .jpg and that the size of the photo is close to the right size. Don't try to upload a 1000x1500 image for a 200x300 slot.

Hi Linda: I already have photos on my site at: squidoo.com/dentures-whiterock and I want to add the "alt" attribute to each one. I think this url is correct: When I use the edit mode in a module that has my photo, I enter the above url in the box that says "Link the photo to this URL(optional) " When I do that, I hit save and publish, but when I go back later, the url has disappeared. Will you tell me if I'm doing these things correctly so far, and why the url disappears? I've spent hours wrestling with this problem, I will be grateful for your help.

    LindaJM Mar 21, 2011 @ 2:33 pm | delete
After you place your URL in the box, hit "upload photo" again before "save". This should save your work. Let me know if it doesn't work, and I'll try to think of a better solution.

Thanks very much for your help, but I found that the only way to keep that URL in the box was to delete the image, enter the URL, and then upload the image again. This is what I entered:
When I click on it, it takes me to the home page of Squidoo. Is that normal? I hate to bug you again.
  • Reply
    LindaJM Mar 21, 2011 @ 11:54 pm | delete
No, it isn't normal, but that might change after you publish the page. Until then, don't worry about it! There are several features on Squidoo that don't work right until after the page is published.

After nearly completing my first lens and having already uploaded 5-6 photos, I was cruising along, learning as I go. However, all photos have now disappeared and they will not reload as previously. Even my bio will not accept a photo upload. What am I doing wrong?

Honestly, I've never encountered a disappearing photo problem. You may have to report this one to headquarters. It would help to know something about the photos... are they all jpg and gif? Because that's all Squidoo will accept. Also, I'd refresh the page and see if they will come back... maybe even turn off the computer and start again, to refresh computer memory and see if that helps.

This is just what I needed. I will spend a lot of time here.
I am stuck with an issue on photo uploads. I was working my way through my first lens and had an issue come up like therrosterguy008. The photo I uploaded in the intro to the lens was rated poorly by the health check because of a series of six numbers ahead of the file name. File saved in my pictures as "tristan.jpg" but showing up as "126752tristan.jpg". While I was messing around to overcome this issue, all six photos from the modules I had completed disappeared as well as the photo in my bio.
When I go back to the bio or those modules, the pictures will not upload again. What have I done? Can you please advise?

    LindaJM Jan 28, 2010 @ 9:39 pm | delete
Sounds like a glitch that should be reported to headquarters (the photos disappearing.) As for the numbers before your file name, they're supposed to be there. The won't affect your search engine optimization. However... to get a good score on the health check, name your photo with the same name as your lens. For example the name of this lens is "Image & Video Mentor" so my intro photo should be named image-video-mentor.jpg (or gif.)

It is an excellent info bundle on image and video help topic. However, I have a small query, could you pl clear this doubt? My first lens How-to-Crack-USMLE is technically all fine except one part. i.e. the Intro photo. I put an image of a doctor, but the health check says it is not done properly. I would love to correct the mistake and ensure the lens is 100% fine technically. Need some suggestions. Thanks

Awesome info--just found this. Thanks for your time & effort creating this lens.

I am SO stumped! I may need to email you.

I'm trying to FTP a product image "picture" I've created, UP TO my hosting account, and from there to a module in Squidoo. I'm pretty sure my problem lies w/ my hosting and/or ftp accounts---NOT their faults, but mine for being SO clueless! I got help in late Nov-Dec 09 w/ one of my lenses, and took notes, but apparently not enough. I can't go back to that person w/o paying her, she was generous the first time, I doubt the 2nd. I'll try calling the hosting company tomorrow to see if they can help too.

I AM getting some pics uploaded, but they either disappear when I publish my lens, or a dialog box appears, asking for the password so the person can see the lens. NOT my intention! lol!

I had it all "done", then published, then someone told me about the problems, so I've gone in and deleted that module for now. DANG and Double Dang!

Hopefully you can answer me here or via email. I think the rest of the lens is okay (tho in some of the bottom modules I'd like help w/ spacing the words out, but that's not as important as the FTP-ing. The lens in question is http:www. squidoo.com/PinkandRedValentineGifts, but again, the frustrating module is gone.

Thanks for any help you can send.

    Hi Linda:
Thanks for getting back to me. I did recently just go ahead and publish it, even with the static image. Oh well...The URL is http://www.squidoo.com/Easy-Homemade-Dog-Food.
    Thanks again for your time.

    Hi:
I seem to have a problem with an animated GI. When I try to add it in a text module, it stops "animating" after a few minutes and then remains a static image. I believe that it is linked properly, , and I refreshed and published again, but still no go. Any ideas what's going wrong?

    Thanks,
    Denis

    LindaJM Jan 9, 2010 @ 3:16 am | delete
Primadogga, it probably quits animating because that's how it was made. I have little experience with animated images but have tried making them, and I know I had an option for how many times the animation would repeat. Why don't you tell me your lens URL so I can take a look? Is it published yet?

HI, I am very new to html and am not sure if that is even the problem so any help would appreciated. I uploaded an image into one of my modules. That worked just fine. But linking a URL to the image is baffling me. I copied and pasted a couple of different URLs that I have used before but no luck. When I view my lens and click on the image, it does not take me to the URL that I want. It takes me to the Squidoo home page. My lens is
http://www.squidoo.com/lensmaster/new_workshop/freemarketingstuff. The 3rd module is the one I am trying to fix. The module with the data on Renegade Univeristy. Can you please help me correct this? :-) Donna

Donna, did you put an entire link in the box, or just the URL? You're supposed to put just the URL in there, not an entire link. The URL is just this part: http://www.yourlink.com

Hi Linda, I checked and my URL was just not there despite me pasting it in there. So I put my URL in there " http://DonnaFerreira.renegadeuniversity.com/ru4" and it will not take it. I paste it and then hit save. It will not link to the image. What am I doing wrong?? :-( Donna

Donna, after you place the URL in the box, click on the 'update photo' link again, then save the module, then publish the lens. See if that will do it for you!

To center, you can try this (remove the periods to make it work)..

    <.p style="text-align:center;"><.img src="http://www.yourserver.com/yourimage.png" width="200" height="150" alt="Describe Your Photo" /><./p>

    Hi

    I tried your code

using align="center" The image aligned left.
So is there some other trick to get it to align center?

The image that I could not get to show on my lens is 240 X 156 px. and it's 20.35 kb.
You can see it at this address on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hapyday/592110999/

I looked at the image. If you right-click and look at properties you'll see it is 500px × 325px. Also it is copyright, all rights reserved. Is that your image? If not I don't think you can use it without permission. If it is yours, then I'd try reducing the size and reloading it into the module.

The Squidoo team is aware of the YouTube video module problem and is working on it. In the meantime you could switch to using Video modules - they are still working.

I was able to post a photo in the introduction to my lens, but when I open the Lens in the browser as any other user would do, I don't see the photo. It only shows in the edit mode or in my profile as a thumbnail. And I can't figure out how to add a description to that same module.
An other issue you might help me with is that when I open a new text module, the Left side of the page hides off the screen and I can't scroll far enough to the left to see the edge. Is that my monitor or is there something wrong with the site? Does one have to have a wide screen to view these pages? So I compose my text in Word and then paste it in the field because I can't see the edge of text, the first 2 or 3 letters are out of view.
    Thanks!

Hapyday, I've never heard of a photo that will show in the workshop but not in the finished page. Could you tell me more about your image? What size it it? I know Squidoo doesn't take images over about 100,000kb... I always reduce mine to 400x300 for the intro module.

About the screen scrolling - that's probably because of your computer's screen resolution. If it is set at 800x600, can you make it a higher resolution? Another thing you could try - if you have a mouse with a little wheel on it - is to hold down the control key and turn the wheel toward you until the page fits the screen.

    I hope this helps!

Well - I gave this 5 stars awhile back - but either you have really updated this lens or my memory is fading (I'm hoping) it is the former! In any manner, I lensrolled this to ~30 of my digital image related lenses and added it as a featured lens on one (more as I get a chance to edit more lenses. I can't repeat my 5 stars - but I can add an angel blessing this time!

    Linda

I have searched for a solution to my problem for many months and so far have never gotten it resolved.

I had images linked from another site on several lenses and these worked fine for months. At some point they started to appear and disappear on several lenses.

I tried asking in the forum, submitting a bug report and even consulted with my web host,

This post gives details of the problem:

    http://www.squidu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=42769

Have you heard about this happening before? Other lensmasters have mentioned similar problems with hotlinked images.

[in reply to crosscreations] I realy wouldn't advise that - music playing automatically can turn a LOT of people off (especially if they're in a public place, or are on dialup)

This is fantastic! I've been visiting many different Squidoo mentor pages to learn some tips and tricks, but this one tops my list. THANKS!

Question: Is there some way at Squidoo to have an audio set to automatically start playing when your link is clicked? I've seen it done elsewhere... think if was slide.com. For example I made a lens about Thomas the Tank Engine toys and have a video on there that plays the intro tune for the Thomas episodes, one any Thomas fan would recognize...sure would be cool if it played automatically once arriving at the site.

Lafitness, you would have to contact the site you're an affiliate for to see if you can use their copyrighted images. Usually since you're selling something for them, they won't mind.

Many affiliate sites provide images with code you can copy and paste. If that isn't available to you, then copy the images to your hard drive, upload them to a photo sharing site such as photobucket, and add them to your lens. Photobucket provides HTML code you can copy and paste.

Or you can use my instructions - How to link to an image file hosted on your own server.

    I hope this helps!

Hi there! I don't know if the box you're referring to can be removed in the workshop version of the lens. Does it still appear after publishing? If so, I've never seen that happen. Please send me a link to your lens.

When you click "edit" on a text module, you'll find a link for removing the photo in the bottom-right corner of the edit screen. I hope that helps.

Hi Linda, this lens is very helpful. I have a question: When you put your own photo inside the text module using the html code, how do you remove the image placeholder that is already programmed there. When I tried to do this my picture sat to the right of the gray box that says "no image yet" How do you remove that box?

    - it used to be that the intro module would display only a small avatar-sized graphic, but now you can upload a larger image. I usually make mine about 250px by 350px.
