Imagining Pleshey

Ranked #5,786 in Travel & Places, #162,684 overall

What's Going on in Pleshey?

Whilst I was staying with some good friends we happened to visit the nearby historic and beautiful village of Pleshey in Essex. That's us opposite - looking like we're one member short of the famous five.

Over that barbed gate are the ruins of a Saxon Castle... or so they say...

But what's really lurking up there?

This is the view you see when you peer over the barbed gate. The bridge leading up to the top of the mount is directly in front of you.

What is Up There?

What They Would Have Us Believe

This is the official story- a few little bits of information about the Motte and Bailey castle that once stood on the mound. Motte and Bailey castle were mostly made of wood, so little remains of them today.

This sign can be found in the village by the moat. Beware the ducks!

Ruins of An Old Castle?

Maybe there's more castle left than you can see from the lower ground?

Or perhaps exciting bits of castle have sunk down into the soft earth?

Perhaps there is a whole castle down there still complete with skeletons and treasure and ghosts?

Maybe there are catacombs inside the mound?

Maybe there is a knight asleep up there or a whole army of knights waiting for a time when Britain needs them!

The castles pictured here are Norman Keeps and most of their architecture survives todays because it was made with stone. Pleshey castle probably would have mostly been made out of wood, which is why you can't see any ruins standing on the mound from the ground.

As you can see from the image here, these Norman Keeps would have had wooden floorboards on their upper levels- where you can see the windows, but they've rotted away over time.

Treasure?

Perhaps there is treaure up there!

Perhaps at the dead of night the council are up there with metal detectors trying to find where they need to start digging? It would be a big job that's for sure!

Perhaps a dragon is guarding the treasure?

Perhaps there is a secret map that leads to buried treasure?

Perhaps there is a vast room under the mound filled with treausre- like in the film National Treasure.

One thing's for sure- if Essex county councillors start coating their houses in gold then we know something strange and exciting has been found up on Pleshey's mound.

Dinosaur Hill

Dragon Bones?

I saw this cartooon once, like the one above, I think it was in one of my childhood books and I genuinely thought that every single hill had a dinosaur underneath it and that the hill was made up from the curve of their spine.

I didn't take Geography for GCSE so for all I know that could be true!

I believe the mounds, made for Motte and Bailey Castles, are made by piling up all the earth that you dig up for the moat bit. Who knows, maybe they used a dinosaur skeleton to give the piled up earth a bit of structure? Otherwise they might well have ended up with a sunken castle!

Perhaps dragon bones are sticking up out of the ground. Perhaps the gates are locked because Essex County Council don't want people tripping on the bones and then trying to sue them for conpensation?

I dunno, probably just some historical ruins, or something.

My Conclusion!

Sure, those photos show us what it looks like up there but I still say there's plenty of room for all my theories, you just have to know where to look!
