Under the Sea 3D IMAX Review by Cinema Confidential

Running length is nominal but that is no surprise since IMAX docs are characteristically short. In the case of "Under the Sea" however you're starved for more. Total 40 minutes long? I could have watched hours of this stuff.

Under the Sea 3D Movie Reviews From Rotten Tomatoes

This film has received 95 percent positive reviews from the tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. That's an almost perfect score and Under the Sea received comments like, "The footage is spectacular, the colors electric, the life aquatic trippier than anything you'll see in even the most wildly imaginative animated fare."

"Excitement and fun run deep Under the Sea"

Advance Blu-ray Review of Imax Under the Sea from Blu-ray.com

Blu-ray.com reviewed the Under the Sea blu-ray disc in advance of the public release on March 30th. In terms of the blu-ray disc, the reviewer said this film is "bubbling to the surface with a magnificent 1080p/VC-1 transfer...blessed with a stunning source and a proficient presentation...immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track; one that does justice to Hall's lively soundscape, New Guinea and Indonesia's enveloping waves, and Micky Erbe and Maribeth Solomon's diverse music." They gave the movie itself a score of 3.5 out of 5, the video 4.5, the audio 4.0 and the extras 1.0 so it sounds like the film itself received a pretty decent transfer. If you have the option, it seems that this is a film worth buying on blu-ray.

Imax Under the Sea Blu-ray Review by Blu-ray.com

Under the Sea doesn't bring anything new to the IMAX fold, but its Blu-ray release certainly does. While similar documentaries have been crippled by mediocre AV presentations, Warner has granted Hall's fourth underwater adventure a stunning video transfer and a satisfying DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track.

IMAX Under the Sea Rated For Children

In case you are wondering what aged children this film is appropriate for.

under-the-sea-puzzle

Under the Sea has been recommended for children who are six-years old and up. It does have scenes that are startling like when one fish eats another or when creatures snap. Plus mating habits are discussed and shown and global warming and the danger it presents to us all is discussed. These considerations aside, your child must also be old enough to sit through a 40-minute documentary and, if a 3D version becomes available, to wear the 3D glasses.

Imax Under the Sea 3D Review

Film Journal International said that, when watching children at the 3D version at the Imax theatre, you might think that watching Under the Sea in front of the huge Imax screen would cause the distance to grow between the audience and the viewer but that it does not appear to do so once you don 3D glasses. Members of the audience made comments like it felt that animals were right in their lap and children often tried to pet the screen.

IMAX: Volcanoes of the Deep Sea on DVD and Blu-ray

This Imax film will take you to one of the most remote places on earth. The volcaones in the deep sea are full of life but footage is extremely rare. Volcanoes of the Deep takes you 12,000 feet down into the ocean and into a volcanic world in the ocean packed with unusual creatures and new landscapes. New technology allowed the filmmakers to capture footage that is better than any that has been done to date.

With Amazon customer reviews like this one from H.L. Preston, "As a professional scientist in another field, I found this riveting - and so did my six-year-old" and "I saw this feature at our local IMAX and as soon as it was released on DVD I had to have it!" by D. Harms, this sounds like a great choice for nature movie lovers.

IMAX Presents: Ocean Oasis - Two Worlds, One Paradise on DVD

This Imax documentary, Ocean Oasis, is a trip into the seas and deserts of two worlds, the Baja California desert and Mexico's Sea of Cortes. It includes footage of underwater life -- of the giant manta ray, migrating whales, terns and elephant seals. You will travel over mountains, deserts, oases and mangrove swamps and right into the sea.

Amazon customer reviews of this Imax film are also five-star with comments like Erikca Stohn's, "This movie gives you a little, in fact too little, taste of one of the most beautiful places on Earth! If you love Baja, this movie will bring tears into your eyes! I really recommend it!" and "This is an excellent, breathtaking DVD which I strongly recommend to anyone who is interested in natural beauty of Baja, Mexico." by cemkur. Another winning choice.

The Old Man and the Sea An Animated IMAX Film

A slightly different Imax film, The Old Man and the Sea is a twenty minute animation of Ernest Hemingway's novella, which tells the story of the friendship between an old fisherman and a young boy and the hardships of the sea. The film received an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2000. It took two years for them to put this film together in a manner which included all of the color, imagery and emotion that were in the original work.

Amazon Customer Patrick Savard said, "Each scene is vibrant with life and the film as a whole has a dimension of profound imagination, as Hemingway's masterpiece has." John Rossfeld said, "Our six year old was in awe. Literally. He really loved seeing the images painted (by fingers) onto glass. These reviews are right - it is a wonderful way to introduce children to Ernest Hemingway AND the beauty of animation." A different Imax experience for sure, but an interesting one, too.
