Ancient mariners used the oceans as a venue for exploration, commerce and warfare. Safety and training of these intrepid sailors developed over the centuries and has become standard throughout the world.
I was a submarine sailor in the US Navy and have done tours as a merchant mariner for the Military Sealift Command. As a student I attended Seattle Maritime Academy. Every week my class and I would man the Charles A. Kane, take her through the locks and out to the sound. Once there, we would have at least one abandon ship or a man overboard drill. This meant donning our immersion suits, also known as Gumby suits, and jumping off a 107 foot training boat at 7 knots into the water. Good times.
Of course, in a real emergency, these suits give you a fighting chance to survive and can save your life.

I used a Mustang Ocean Commander Immersion Suit while in school and a neoprene suit that was provided by the MSC when I worked aboard USNS ships. I recommend a suit that has a harness, it makes rescue easier. I liked the Ocean Commander suit because I could have my hands free by removing my mittens, I liked the boots too. It was also lighter.

Mustang Survival Immersion Suit, Adult Universal Size, 110 330lbs. . Designed for use in commercial operations, this immersion suit is the ideal ship abandonment suit for workboats, transport vessels, drilling rigs, supply ships, steamships and commercial fishermen. Easy to don in stormy conditions, with five-fingered insulated gloves and a water-tight face seal. Includes a buddy line and lifting harness, with wrist and ankle adjustments for a better fit. Featuring 5-mm fire retardant neoprene, which also provides flotation and hypothermia protection. The HR version meets new IMO/SOLAS immersion suit standard IMO RES.MSC.207(81). Standard version without lifting harness and buddy line are still available for use on non-SOLAS vessels. A declaration of conformity (DOC) is available upon written request.
