The Impact of Social Media on Divorce

Spending too much time on social networking sites can have a negative impact on a relationship. Just like sitting in front of the television watching football all day, letting social networking take over your life can infuriate your spouse. It can lead to not spending time helping out around the house or time doing things together. This can all cause tension within a relationship.

Although in the main a positive, keeping in touch with people, or getting back in touch with people, you do not see very often can have unforeseen negative consequences. Through social media websites many have got back in touch with people from their past, and this can include people they were previously in a relationship with. This can cause obvious issues.

It has been said that social networking encourages people to flirt more. As it is just written messages and not in person those doing it may not take it seriously, at least not to begin with. However, their husband or wife may not see it that way. And, of course, something that start off innocent can develop into something more, therefore affecting a marriage.

Through social media sites, such as Facebook, people have found out about their partners affairs. It is harder to keep secrets as anyone you know can post anything they want, with all of their online "friends" seeing what has been written.

Things read on social media sites can be take out of context. This can lead to false accusations and a lack of trust in a relationship.

There is also the more sinister side of social media. There have been examples of people telling their online "friends" that they have been having an affair with their spouse although it is untrue.

So, does social media really ruin marriages? There is evidence that in some cases social media has caused the break-up of a marriage. But is this really the case or did it just contribute to already existing underlying problems or speed up the process of the inevitable?

It is not just in causing divorce that social media has had an impact, but also during a divorce case itself. Facebook posts and emails have been used as evidence in the family law courts. Social media has also been used as a tool to determine people's behaviour. An example of this are situations where parents have lost custody of their children because of evidence gathered from social media.

Social media websites, then, can have an impact on marriages in all sorts of ways. They can cause, or at least assist, affairs. People can find out about an unfaithful partner through social media and people spending too much time on social media sites can impact marriages. And then there are divorce cases themselves, which can include evidence gathered from social media.
