Chevrolet Impala
This article is a tribute to my favorite car.
Mine, (2001 model year Impala) had over 850,000 km before I gave it away (still running fine)...Unbelievable yet it's really true!
On this page you will find beautiful Impala photos and information (including the 2011 Impala).
GM is still alive!

Great Reliable Car
GM got this one right! (even though they did indeed go bankrupt)!
I couldn't resist writing an article about my car. I do a lot of driving. (By the way, I am not a used care salesman and I DO NOT work for GM). After so many miles, I know my car so well. The entire exhaust was still original. The transmission had to be changed at 500k, but the engine was still "factory." I rarely changed the oil (only every 20,000km to 25,000km or so). I learned long ago that the recommendations to change the oil every 5000km is only for the average driver. But if you drive a lot it would be quite ridiculous, Some people I know NEVER change the oil, and their car is FINE right until the end, however they don't pile on the miles!
In my 2001 impala, only the gas gauge sensor failed, all the other sensors were still the originals until the end (at 850,000 km). Forget about engine shampoo, no way! In previous cars that I'd owned, as soon as I cleaned the engine, the problems would start. I learned that, unless a real professional does it, never ever touch the engine. No Way!
Look at how dirty it got...see photo below.
The car doesn't mind. Nobody on the street can see under the hood anyway. Everything was working perfectly when I gave it away. The engine was quiet and smooth, even the transmission was perfect.
My next car was also an Impala...of course, (I got a 2004 model). For this car I do actually follow the "change oil indicator" because the algorithm got a lot more clever. It usually triggers around 11,000 km or so, which is much more reasonable than the old 5000km recommendations.
I have discovered that the only people who hate the Impala are the very aggressive and bad (overall) drivers. There are very many negative and hateful types out there. They automatically get skeptical, then jealous and freak out upon finding out about my experience with the Impala!
The car I drove before the Impala was a GM Chevrolet Caprice. What a piece of junk that was. I was in the garage for repairs every week. The car was a pig on gas, but strong like a TANK. All in all though, a real pain in the *ss.

IMPALA (the animal)
Yes, the name did come from this creature!
An impala (Aepyceros melampus Greek ?????, aipos "high" ?????, ceros "horn" + melas "black" pous "foot") is a medium-sized African antelope. The name impala comes from the Zulu language meaning "Gazelle". They are found in savannas and thick bushveld in Kenya, Tanzania, Swaziland, Mozambique, northern Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, southern Angola, northeastern South Africa and Uganda. Common Impalas can be found in numbers of up to 1,600,000 in Africa .

Historical information about the Impala
The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size automobile built by the Chevrolet division of General Motors. One of America's most successful nameplates, Impala became the best-selling automobile in the United States when full-sized cars dominated sales. From 1958 until 1965, the Impala was Chevrolet's most expensive full-size car. In 1965, Impala's sales peak, Chevrolet introduced the Caprice. The Impala was then positioned down one trim level and still above the more economical models the Bel Air and Biscayne. It remained the most popular full-size Chevrolet model through the mid-eighties.
The Impala, named for a southern African antelope, is most readily distinguished by having three sets of taillights, while most contemporary cars only have one or two. It competed in the market against other full-size cars such as the Ford Galaxie 500 and the Plymouth Fury. The Impala SS nameplate was revived in 1994-96 on the full-size, rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet. The Impala nameplate is currently used (since 2000) for the full size, front-wheel-drive Chevrolet.

- I enjoy reading your lenses, and have a few questions on your Impala. What colour was your Impala? Where the seats comfortable? What type of oil did you use....slick 50? How did you put so many KM on it? Did you rust proof it? Do you believe in rust-proofing your car? Did you buy it new or used? I believe in buying a new car, to avoid any headeaches or previous owners who did not treat thier cars appropirately.
Your thougths and input is much appreciated.
