Imperfectly Natural.com

Imperfectly Natural.com is the home of natural alternatives. How did I become the Editor of this website that has over 3-400,000 hits a month?

It is all thanks to Squidoo!

This lens tells you how I first met the Imperfectly Natural Woman, Janey Lee Grace and what made her contact me three months later and make me the most fabtastic offer. You will also learn about the Imperfectly Natural website and how it may be able to help some Lensmasters drive traffic to their lenses!

The start of my Imperfectly Natural story

A day that was to change my life, but I did not know it at the time!

Saturday 12 July 2008

Have you ever had one of those "feelings?" You feel absolutely driven to do something, but you don't know why? You just have this inkling in the back of your mind that you just HAVE to do it?

This was one of those days!

One of our local schools was having an "Eco Fair". It was the school that my daughter Sparky would be transferring to in September. Both my Lovely Hubby (LH) and I do as much as we can to "reduce, reuse and recycle". We do it because of what we know due to LH's job. I sometimes think we know too much about how man is devastating his natural habitat. But that is another story!

I was insistent that we went to the Eco Fair. The weather was lousy - typical English Summer weather: damp and windy and cold! Sparky and her younger sister Lizzie did not want to go but I was adamant, almost obsessed - looking back it's as though I had a strange premonition that I HAD to go . There was someone who was going to be doing a talk at the Eco Fair and I wanted to see her. Her name - Janey Lee Grace.

Janey has been making a name for herself in the UK as an expert in "natural living". Not only does she make regular TV appearances, she also features on BBC Radio 2 three afternoons a week on the Steve Wright Show. I was curious, I wanted to see if she was the same in real life as she sounded on the radio and TV.

So we dragged the girls out. We listened to Janey's talk, which was great. The girls were so interested that they wandered off elsewhere - ah well! Plenty of opportunity to convert them to natural living another time. I bought a couple of books, that Janey signed and that was that. But I was buzzing so much that I decided that my very first lens on Squidoo would be about Janey and it was published on 14th July 2008.

My very first lens - the Imperfectly Natural Woman

Another landmark day in my Imperfectly Natural life...

Contact from the Imperfectly Natural Woman!

Tuesday 07 October 2008

Twelve lenses on and an email landed in my inbox. I got the surprise of my life. It was from the subject of my very first lens: Janey Lee Grace. Oh my gosh!

Janey wrote: "Love your lens on me! As someone who can't even get it together to make my blog look half decent I'm most impressed. Have we met ?"

I responded: "Yes, we have met and I found you so inspiring that I wrote my very first ever lens on Squidoo about you.................

The reason why I am writing on Squidoo is that I have a very bad problem with my right ear, called Otosclerosis and cannot work at the moment due to problems with balance and co-ordination. Have always wanted to write and as I am pretty good at research I thought I would give Squidoo a go. It doesn't pay the bills, but hey I am loving it as writing is saving my sanity."

Janey answered, suggesting that perhaps I could do some writing for her website: Imperfectly natural.com. Oh my word!

We spoke on the phone. We met up - Janey lives not far from me - and to cut a long story short, I am now doing some freelance feature writing and editing the site. The site was completely redesigned and still needs work on it to squish the inevitable bugs but I am now happy that it is good enough to be able to start broadcasting the URL further afield. So if you do go and visit please bear with us if something is not working.

There is even a link to my Janey lens on the Home Page and considering that the site gets upwards of 300,000 hits a month, what a backlink!

Imperfectly Natural.com - what is it all about?

Building an Imperfectly Natural community

As Janey herself says:

"This site is to help build an Imperfectly Natural Community, where I hope to share with you everything I can on the best natural and holistic ideas for us, our kids, our partners, and for our way of life and our environment... but in a realistic way.

You don't have to become a tree hugging eco-warrior, and I won't preach to you, but with your help we can bring a more natural, chemical free, and more eco-friendly way of living right into the mainstream... that's right, change the world!"

Some Imperfectly Natural tips

Janey Lee Grace - The Green Queen on TV

Watch out for the mention of 100% eco friendly knickers! Janey also tells you how to use soapnuts and what other natural products will clean your home without making it toxic.

Why should you visit Imperfectly Natural?

Janey takes all her recommendations seriously and personally tests and reviews every new product that is brought to her attention. She is strict about not allowing anyone to advertise on the site unless they are ethical, fair-trade and natural and she can give their company a glowing endorsement.

All companies that are listed in the Directory also have opportunities to provide special offers and competitions on "Janey's Tips" - the bi-monthly e-zine that is emailed to thousands of subscribers - or to offer a competition prize on the front page of the site.

The Imperfectly Natural Forum

As good as SquidU!

Dottyspots and Soapnutter (!) moderate the Imperfectly Natural Forum, which is one of the nicest Forums (or is that Fora?) on the Internet, definitely on a par with SquidU!

The members exchange tips and converse about all things Natural and if you want to know which "natural" deodorant works and which doesn't, amongst other things of course, then this is a great place to find out.

Soapnuts

My only New Year's resolution for 2009

My Imperfectly Natural secret is that I don't use soapnuts enough! I confess this in an article on the Imperfectly Natural website.

Another reason for Lensmasters to visit Imperfectly Natural

Do you write lenses about "natural" products or services?

PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY!

Have you used any of the products in the Recommended Products section of Imperfectly Natural.com?

We feature new articles on Imperfectly Natural every week and we are constantly on the look out for new topics and writers. If you have a lens about any of the products in our Recommended Products section then add the link to the Plexo below.

Then email me via the "contact me" button on my Bio and let me know if you would like to contribute. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANYTHING ELSE AT THIS STAGE!

Adding your link to the plexo or e-mailing me does not guarantee that your submission will be accepted.

Any irrelevant links will be deleted from the Plexo.

If we invite you to submit an article/feature, you will be sent some guidelines. The article/feature will have to be at least 500 words long and NOT spammy. For a definition of Spam, see my lens Squid Etiquette!

And if you do not have a lens about any of the products we recommend, then why not write one?

Submitting an article to Imperfectly Natural

What's in it for you?

You will be allowed to add links to your lens and/or your website, but the links must not be Spammy. You should also be aware that the Feature may be edited and there will be no payment.

However, you will get valuable backlinks and exposure on a site that has a massive number of hits each month!

My other Imperfectly Natural lenses

One of them is about an important campaign

Imperfectly Natural.com is supporting a campaign against what I think is one of the most stupid of all the stupidest pieces of legislation to come out of the European Parliament.

My Imperfectly Natural connection is due to Squidoo!

Thank you Squidoo!

When I first joined Squidoo I told my husband I had found a website where I thought I could do some writing and at the same time learn all about publishing features and articles on the web. I explained that I would write about parenting and environmental issues and use them to demonstrate my writing and research skills to prospective clients.

And yes, I said, there could be some money in it too. However, within a few days I realised that making money on Squidoo would mean patience, a huge investment of time, an ability to learn monetising and promotion techniques and probably a bit of luck. The most important thing was to set realistic expectations, so that I would not get disheartened if I could not achieve what turned out to be impossible objectives.

The ability to realistically asses what Squidoo could offer me is probably the most important part of my "Squidoo story" and this will be the subject of a new lens.

I will carry on Squidooing, I cannot imagine not being part of such a great Community, but life will now have to be more of a juggling act than it has been for the last five months - but hey, isn't that why AJ stands for Always Juggling!
