Resin Cameos
Resin cameos, also called fashion cameos are the most affordable or lowest priced in finished jewelry. Manufactured cameos are made with either a resin or polymer that is dyed and poured into molds. Molds are made from an original hand carved mold. Some molds are made from taking the impressions of a hand carved shell cameo.Fashion cameos come in various styles, shapes, colors and sizes and can have really nice to excellent detail. There are vintage, new, and new reproduction cameos that are made by this process. Vintage cameos tend to be worth more depending on the availability of the particular style, the material, where they were made, and the date of manufacture.
This style of cameo are mass produced, so they are not one of a kind cameos. Setting these cameos in hand made and hand crafted jewelry settings makes the cameo jewelry more unique.
Vintage Resin Cameo Wire Wrapped Ring
Hand Carved Shell Cameos
Hand carved shell cameos are carved out of shells like sardonyx and carnelian by master carvers in Torre del Greco, Italy. These shells have from two to eight layers of color, which gives a the carvers the opportunity to create three dimentional little works of art. Hand carving a cameo can take between a few days to a few months to complete depending on the complexity of details on the cameo.Shell cameos have been prized by collectors and jewelers for hundreds of years. Hand carved shell cameos are more than just jewelry or personal adornment. They are a personal item to be cherished, passed down through generations and carefully conserved. Since these cameos are completely made and carved by hand, each one unique and never two that are exactly alike.
Hand carved shell cameos come in different grades. Student carvings are the lowest grade and go up to museum quality. Their values depend on the grade of the cameo as well as the detail. These cameos also come in many different shapes and sizes.

Agate Cameos
Agate cameos are primarily ultrasonically carved in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. These agate cameos are more durable and typically cost more than cameos made out of other materials.There are different colors agate cameos are available in like blue, black, green and red. Two layer agate cameos have been around for several years and now three layer cameos are also on the current market.
Just like other carved cameos, the more detail the higher the value. These cameos also come in several different shapes and sizes.
