Importance of Antivirus Softwares

I just want to share this lens because I read in Facebook, someone posted on someone's status that you would not actually need an anti-virus to protect your computer from virus if you act with cautiousness at all time. I totally and strongly disagree even if you really know your stuff. He also mentioned, as long as you do not click any malicious links you see in the internet you are safe. Nah! There are many ways how virus gets into our personal computers, laptops or netbooks so we should never presume that we are 100% safe and secured even without an anti-virus installed on our machine. I'm not saying he is wrong (maybe he has reasons for saying those things and still those are his opinions and I really respect that). But I can not leave it that way and I know in myself that I should answer with my own opinions too, not only to him but for others who believe that anti-virus program is an option to utilize.

Still, we must be responsible for what we are doing by needing an ally who will protect us and keep our precious computers free from highly risk viruses like trojan, worms and others because we do not want to regret when things get worse at the end.

How Computer Gets Infected by Virus?

These are the ways:

Personal Computers are prone to virus and we must be responsible to stop the infiltration of these bad guys right into our machine.

I'm sure all of you are eager to know how these viruses get into our computer. Well, here's how:
  • 1Plugging flash/usb drives into our computer can be dangerous especially when the flash drive has a virus hidden inside (You would not know if the flash drive you insert has a virus or none because in the first place you do not have an ally who will scan it for you).
  • 2Browsing the net even with a maximum care might infect your computer without being noticed.
  • 3Cds/Dvds you borrow from your friend might contain a virus. We don't know where in the world those cds/dvds burned (it might be on the infected computer, so beware!).
  • 4Downloading email attachments are not 100% sure (though some email services like yahoo and google mail have a virus scanner to do the job). Still, just to be safe, after you got the attachment, don't open it yet until you do scanning with your anti-virus program. This also applies to all files you download.
  • 5If your computer has a bluetooth functionality, transferring files between computer and mobile phone or other computers are on the go and may be a vehicle or bridge for viruses.
And next will be coming from you... I'm sure you have other things running on your head right now (that are not listed above) so better share it with us. =)

And I have a last question for you guys, do you think that anti-virus is just an option to use or it is a must have friend that we must trust and depend on? (well not truly to depend on it but better with one than nothing..)

Your Answer to Above Risks

Free Edition or Paid Edition

Which of the two edition?

Based on my experiences, if you have money, go and buy paid edition (Professional). You'd better buy it than use free edition. Why? Because professional edition supports full features that free/trial edition lacks of. But if you do not have money right now, just stick to the free edition. Better with one than nothing as one of my friends told me.

Anyway, you should have a good reason why you choose a certain anti-virus program (will not discuss or recommend any anti-virus softwares here because I know others had done it already). It depends on your choice or others' recommendation on what to buy. As long as the anti-virus is famous for removing real viruses and well-known worldwide, I think you can rely on them.

I use AVG Free Edition (wait... did I say lately that I would not discuss any anti-virus softwares here? Well it's just needed to give you an idea of what free anti-virus you can use). It's good to have them (but remember you should only have one anti-virus installed because if you install more than one, unexpected results might occur) especially when you're not the only one who use the computer at home. I also gave a shot for Avast, the free edition, due to at those days I looked for the best one.

I'm not telling you that having anti-virus program on your machine does guarantee you a 100% virus-free environment. These softwares will only lessen the risk of your computer being infected by all forms of viruses. Since free edition costs you nothing and often there's no technical support to assist you, paid edition is a life-saver. You give money and in return expect their good services. I think that's how things work.

Have a happy surfing bind with enough confidence because at some point you know you are safe (well not actually safe but atleast you know an ally is watching and guarding you at all time). =)

Most Important Thing to Remember

''Prevention is better than cure."

In other words, even if you are confident that your computer is virus free you must have an anti-virus installed on your machine. Do you know why? Read "Why Anti Virus is Needed to Install?".

Anyway, this lens is built for you to be aware of the risks that viruses can do to your pc. Besides, I don't want to see you regret if you let them do their evil deeds.

All installed at the same time? I guess that's not a good practice. You should only install one to avoid complicated results between them.. Anyway, let me know what you've experienced so far. Thanks.
