Heterocycles- Chemistry behind life

Chemistry has a lot of fascinating fact , one such is hetero cyclic compounds. Every first step of life starts with hetero-cyclic compounds. Every man's potential to think , intelligence , behavior, character depends on his gene. The basic skeleton of the genetic material (DNA) is made up of hetrocycles like adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine. Thus knowing about heterocyclic compound and its application is part of venturing human life.

Heterocyclic compounds are organic compounds that contain a ring structure containing atoms in addition to carbon, such as sulfur, oxygen or nitrogen, as part of the ring.

Examples Of Heterocyclic Compound

Examples of Heterocycles

Heterocyclic compounds are organic compounds that contain a ring structure containing atoms in addition to carbon, such as sulfur, oxygen or nitrogen, as part of the ring.

A heterocyclic compound is a cyclic compound which has atoms of at least two different elements as members of its ring(s)

Important!

Application of Heterocyclic Compounds

Heterocycles are widely used in

1.Pharmaceuticals
2.Textiles
3.Food and Nutrition
4.Leather Industries
5.Lubricants and paints
6.Bio-engineering

Biological compounds as heterocycles

Heterocycles and DNA

DNA structure contain pairing of nitrogenous bases.

The four bases are

1. Adenine
2. Guanine
3.Cytosine
4. Thyamine

These bases in DNA is one of the factor responsible for genetic intelligence. All these bases are heterocyclic compound which is responsible for genetic character and intelligence.

Heterocycles in Hemoglobin

Hemoglobin (blood) is a metalloprotein which helps in oxygen transport.

It contain a quaternary structure with four globular protien subunits.

Single globular protien subunit contains iron held in heterocyclic rings called porphyrin ring and imidazole ring.

Heterocycles in Pharmaceuticals

In pharmaceuticals most of the drugs are made up of heterocyles .

Almost 90% of the medicine we use are made up of heterocyclic compounds.

Most of the heterocyclic compounds are used as

1. Analgesic( fever reducing) drugs
2.Antibiotics drugs
3.Anti-inflammatory drugs
4.Anti-cancerous
5.Anti-microbial drugs
6.Anti tumor drugs
7.Anti cancer drugs

Examples of heterocyclic drugs are

1. Pencillin
2.Quinoline
3.Ciprofloxacin

Heterocycles in Vitamins

Vitamins also contain Heterocyclic rings .

Examples are

1.Ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
2.Pyridoxine( Vitamin B6)
3.Riboflavin (vitamin B2)

ATP - Heterocyclic Compound

ATP is called as Adenosine Tri Phosphate.

ATP is also called as Energy Currency Of Life.

It act as energy carrier in cells.

It act as co-enzyme.

It is used in bio synthetic reactions in human body.

It helps in energy transfer in body.

Autotrophs Versus Heterocyclic Compounds

Plants are the only Food Producers.

They are called as Autotrophs.

We the humans are Consumers.

We depend on plants for food.

Plants prepare their food with help of Chlorophyll.

These chlorophyll is a Heterocyclic compound.

Coffee Versus Heterocyclic Compounds

The drinks which we drink contains Heterocyclic compounds in the form of alkaloids .

The coffee, tea and cocoa drinks contain heterocyclic compounds.

The coffee contains caffeine.

The cocoa contains Theobromine.

Fabric Dyes , Dyes, Ink contains Heterocyclic Compounds in the form of Alkaloids

Dyes

Tartrazine

Dyes and ink are made up of substituted pyridine dyes, quinophthalone dyes, tartrazine dyes which are also heterocyclic compounds.

Flowers and Fruits - Heterocyclic compounds

The flowers and fruits contain heterocycles in the form of flavonoids and carotenoids. The colour of fruits and flowers are due to these heterocycles.

I really enjoyed taking biology classes when I was in school, but just a small handful ... not even enough for minor for me.

Reminds me of first-year chem. I found it interesting but never did very well in exams. Wish it was as easy to understand as it is pretty to look at.
