Importance of Pharmacy Technician Certification

One of the things that affect pharmacy technicians the most is the issue of their certification. Should they secure their pharmacy technician certification? How important is a certification, really?

To answer this dilemma, you should first find out if the State where you'll work as a pharmacy technician requires certification or not. Not all States require it and currently, there are thirty States that do require pharmacy technician certification. If your State requires this, you have no choice but to comply and secure your certification. You need to pass the certification exam given out by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians. You need to contact the State Pharmacy Board out the requirements they have for those wanting to work as pharmacy technicians in the area.

Now, if the State where you're in doesn't require this, this is when you need to figure out if seeking a pharmacy technician is something you want to pursue or not. There are some successful pharmacy technicians that are not certified. They were able to find a good place to work with excellent pay and career advancement opportunities. This can happen to you, too. Or, it may not. There's a good chance that you can succeed without any certification, and there's also a good chance, some say a far better chance, that someone else will get that great pharmacy technician job.

This is because employers these days prefer those with pharmacy tech certification even if the State laws where they in doesn't require any certification. This is true in any industries; people with the better educational background, those that have formal trainings, and those that are certified, usually have advantages over their counterparts. Employers tend to hire first those that have better qualifications. Having a pharmacy technician certification is indeed a better qualification. And they're not only hired first, but they're also usually given a higher salary.

This just proves that having a pharmacy technician certification gives you a much better chance of having a successful career in this field. And once that you're certified, if you change work and find yourself in a State that do require certifications, you can work right away because you're already a certified pharmacy technician. This is of course, assuming you're certified by a nationally-recognized certifying organization. So the next time you find yourself or a colleague asking if certification is still important, you can answer it by saying yes with a definite tone.
