Memory
The brains storage of information
The brain takes in a large amount of information. It stores sounds, visions, smells, words, ideas, etc.
Improving your brain does not mean that you are able to take in more information, but rather that the information that you do take in is remembered for a longer period of time.
Processing Speed
The brains ability to access stored information
People that you would consider "quick", or funny, usually have good processing speeds. They are able to communicate ideas more clearly, and recognize patterns easier.
If you like computers you can use this analogy to help you:
If your memory is a hard drive, then your processing speed is RAM.
Concentration
The ability to stay focused on a task
If you have good concentration, you can often complete a task in half the time as someone who has bad concentration can. This is because while their mind is thinking about something else half of the time, you are 100% devoted to the task at hand.
This is very important for productivity.
Ways to improve your brain
Here is how you can improve your brain
- Eat Healthy - You are what you eat. And that applies to the brain too! Studies have shown that eating healthier foods, avoiding junk foods, and eating breakfast help one to improve their mind as well as their physical body.
- Exercise - Exercising helps circulate blood through the body, and that includes your brain. This helps to get your brain to work faster, which will help your brains processing speed.
- Sleep - Your brain needs to get rest in order to function properly. Make sure that you get a full nights sleep, if you want to be alert and focused throughout the day.
- Use both hands - Try using your non dominant hand for doing certain daily activities, such as brushing your teeth. This will improve the neural connections between the right and left sides of the brain.
- Practice Memorization - If you meet someone knew, repeat their names over and over in your head, so that you can remember it. You may also want to play memory games to help you.
- Get smart friends - Find friends that are smarter than you, and hang out with them. You will benefit from their conversations, by learning alternative ways to think.
- Listen to music - Listening to music is supposed to have a positive impact on your reasoning abilities.
- Avoid Alcohol - Alcohol worsens your cognitive abilities for both the short term and long term. Heavy drinkers often have a decrease in their brains size.
- Try something new - When you try something that is new and/or different, you'll gain new experiences and new ways of looking at things. You can often take what you learn in one area and apply it to other aspects of your life.
- Read - One of the best ways that you can improve your brain is to read. Many people have adapted the habit of reading a book a week. This is a great thing that you can do if you want to improve your brain.
- Puzzles and Games - There are many games available which are meant to help the brain. Some examples are crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, sudoku, chess, checkers, etc. There is also a website called lumosity.com which has many games that help improve the brains functions in all 3 areas.
- Golf - Golfing is a mental game as much as it is a physical game. Golf requires a large amount of concentration. It also is a form of exercise which helps to reduce stress, which in turn improves the ability to think.
- Caffeine - Drinking caffeine actually helps to increase the brains ability to process information faster. There is much criticism regarding caffeine, however, proper use in moderation has been proven to have many positive effects on both mental and physical performance.
- Green Tea - Green teas is great for the mind, because it has many antioxidants as well as caffeine. If you are one of those people who is convinced that caffeine is bad for you, you can easily find decaffeinated green tea.
- Debate - Arguing for or against something is a great way to practice thinking hard. It also gives you a new view on a certain subject, and you can learn a lot from debating. You can debate with your friends, or just random people that you meet. If you are too shy to start an argument, you can easily do it online, by joining forums, or discussion boards. Find ones that seem to have large amounts of actual discussion going on, join them, and start joining in on some of the debates.
- Hobbies - Find a new hobby to work on. It can be pretty much anything that seems interesting to you. If you do this, you will discover new things which you can apply to other aspects of your life. It also helps your creativity.
