Improving Gas Mileage to Save Gas

With gas prices increasing daily and hovering at around 4 bucks a gallon it is no wonder it is part of everyday conversation. I often hear jokes about people taking a second mortgage out or buying a moped. It is real and affecting everyones lifestyle.

Many people are doing things differently like taking public transportation or riding a bike or even walking to work or destinations. If your one that is trapped in how you get to work and those are not options you may have considered fuel additives, HHO generators, HHO gas or even a hybrid vehicle.

Tips On How To Improve Gas Mileage

There are many things you can do to improve gas mileage. The big one is avoid jackrabbit starts. The other is ease up on your breaks and coast to a stop.

Find the most direct route. That is use an online map service. Another suggestion if you do a lot of driving or traveling is to use a GPS systems.

A lot of people fail at this one. Keeping tires properly inflated. Check your owners manual and check tire pressure monthly or more. properly inflated tires can save gas up to 2 to 3 %. That could be more than a dime a gallon savings depending on what you drive! By checking tire pressure you also get a chance to see if there may be any tire problems or you need to replace tires.

The irony here is that some people will waste a gallon of fuel driving around town looking to save a nickel a gallon but have not checked their tire pressure since the tires were changed!

Changing out a dirty air filter and most filters can be changed at home or when you get an oil change. Replacing an air filter can help increase gas mileage by 10%.

Tire pressure and air filters are easy enough for most people to do and these should be done according to the owners manual or sooner if you notice a low tire or driving in conditions that require a air filter to be changed much sooner.

When was the last time you had an engine diagnostic or a tune up on your car or truck. If your car is running rough or you have noticed you gas mileage decrease it may be worth it to have one scheduled! Again refer to your owners manual.

Fuel And Gas Additives

Can Fuel Additives Improve Gas Mileage?

Gas additives on older cars may help improve gas mileage and save gas. If your fuel injectors are clogged or a needle valve has tarnish in a carborator fuel additives help keep this from getting restricted or blocked. Remember most good quality gasolines have additives for this purpose.

I have found that adding a bottle of a good fuel injector cleaner about every 2 to 3 thousand miles does help keep things running better and keep you gas mileage at optimal levels. I suspect that it may also extend the life of your fuel injectors or service intervals. Again when adding anything to your gasoline check the owners manual first.

HHO Gas Fuel Cell

HHO gas is getting a lot of attention on the internet. HHO gas claims that it can supplement your fuel and save gas. It is an interesting concept and a lot of experimentation has been going on with all types of fossil fuel engines including diesel from lawnmowers, tractors to cars and trucks. Hypermiling Driving

Is Hypermiling Illegal?

Hypermiling is a method to help save gas. This often includes keeping distances between vehicles and turning a car off at red lights and long waits and a little common sense.

Some methods of hypermiling are dangerous such as over inflating tires to create less rolling resistance but this could create not only a safety hazard for your passengers and yourself but also cost more in th long run because overinflated tires will wear quicker and possibly show signs of damage due to over inflation.

Hypermiling drafting is not only dangerous but illegal in many localities; that is tailgating large trucks which sucks your vehicle up in their draft and saves gas.

Consider some of the techniques for hypermiling but avoid the ones that are illegal or dangerous.

How about turning the engine off at long red lights or train crossings? I think these things should be taught at driving school.
