This can be pretty relaxing, but...

Playing guitar can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby.

The problem is, most people seem to get to a certain point, ability wise, and have trouble progressing after that.

These ruts can last for years and generally cause more stress and frustration.

Let me recommend five simple tips!

Here are five simple steps to try out when your guitar playing is stuck in a rut.

1. Try learning some new chords. It's easy to get bogged down with the same chords. Find a book or look online for interesting chords. Maybe you'll find inspiration in hearing yourself make a new sound with your axe.

2. While you're learning new chords, why not try out some new scales. Few people realize there are more than major and minor scales. Try learning about diatonic scales, melodic and harmonic minor scales and so on.

3. Try listening outside of your comfort zone. Many people like one or two types of music. However, there are hundreds of genres and subgenres out there. I
recommend listening to music you're not used to hearing. I use this tip often when trying to be inspired to a*dvance my playing.

4. Try different tunings. The classic EADGBE tuning is only one way to go. Do a quick web search on alternate tunings, plug your guitar and into your tuner and go wild! As a side note, while you're trying out some funky open tunings pop a slide on your finger and see how that sounds to you.

5. Lastly, why not try some lessons? I don't necessarily mean physical lessons where you drive to someone's house and they teach boring runs and simple songs. There are many online options available. Try finding a good e-course and see if that pulls you out of your rut.
