7 Strategies for Immediately Improving Your Search Engine Rankings
- Research your keywords. Then pick a keyword and stick with it. Don't try to rank for a keyword that gets 10 million searches but has 25 million competitors. Look for one or two keywords that are very relevant to your business, get a reasonable amount of traffic, and that have as few directly competing sites as possible. Your chances of success are much better.
- Get a link to your site from a popular blog in your industry. It helps if you have a really good reason for someone to link to you. Probably the easiest thing to do is create a free information product for visitors to your site to download. If it has true value, then a concerned blogger will tell his readers about it.
- Tweak your web page titles. The title is the single most important on-page element to optimize. Pick your top one or two keywords and make them the first words in your title.
- Set up a Squidoo page with your top keyword in the URL. Make sure the content on the Squidoo page is top quality and drive some traffic to it so that you get listed in Squidoo's directory/search, and make sure you tag it with desirable keywords. Link to your web site from your Squidoo page.
- Do an online press release. Make sure the copy features your keyword prominently. There are free press release distribution services, but if you want to do it right, use PRWeb, pay for the highest level distribution you can afford, and include at least one keyword link back to your web site.
- Submit an XML sitemap. Rather than waiting on Google or Yahoo! to index your entire site, go ahead and push your entire site to them via a sitemap file.
- Write an article and use an article distribution service. Make sure the article has a keyword link to your site. If you combine this with a PRWeb press release, you will instantly create hundreds of new links to your site.
To summarize: Pick a keyword, make that keyword the first word in your home page title, and then get as many links as you can to your site that use the keyword in the link text.
