What is in Dog Food?

Behind innocent-sounding words like "meat byproducts" and "meat meal" are horrific manufacturing practices that would turn your stomach. The nutritional considerations of pet foods go beyond the sources of meat in them. Pet food manufacturers add dangerous preservatives and vitamin fortifications that actually make your pets' food less healthy.
Meat byproducts or meat meal. Both are euphemisms for the parts of animals that wouldn't be considered meat by any smart consumer. The well-known phrase "meat byproducts" is a misnomer since these byproducts contain little, if any, meat. These are the parts of the animal left over after the meat has been stripped away from the bone.
There are several reasons you really do not want to feed your dog or cat commercial foods. Perhaps the most compelling moral reason is that there are rendered, euthanized pets in much of this food. These pets have been mixed with other materials, including some condemned for human consumption: "rotten meat from supermarket shelves, restaurant grease and the "4-D" (dead, diseased, dying and disabled) animals and roadkill."
Two thirds of the pet food manufactured in the United States contains added preservatives, according to the Animal Protection Institute. There are also coloring agents, emulsifiers, lubricants, flavoring agents, pH control agents, synergists and solvents. "Of the more than 8,600 recognized food additives today, no toxicity information is available for 46% of them.
The preservatives have no purpose but to increase the shelf life of the product. This keeps the costs down for manufacturers. Which then translates into higher profits.

Preservatives are toxic to your dog. The pets suffer skin diseases, kidney failure, fur loss and a loss of zest of life.

The damage done can be from allergies to premature death.

The poisoning of our pets by dog food preservatives could be viewed as an early warning for you. If the preservatives can cause this amount of damage, then what are preservatives in your own food doing to you? Kind of makes you wonder just how much processed food you should be accepting into your diet.
