How to optimize your Squidoo tags and get more traffic on your lens

I want to recommend you free software to improve your Squidoo tags(keywords), submit your lens to hundreds of searchengines, analyze your Squidoo lens, ...etc.

In my quest for knowledge, free software and good keywords(tags) to improve my search engine rankings I stumbled upon software and websites(like Squidoo!) that offered or promised great tools like Wordtracker, Brad Callen's SEO Elite, Affiliate Elite, Keyword Elite...names that are so typical for the affiliate scene.

It was hard to find any good free SEO(Search Engine optimization) software for a beginning affiliate marketer!

The problem was that I was not willing to pay for a monthly subscription for Wordtracker or pay over $100 for good software and I wasn't sure if the program was good value because there was no try out version available. The few words that the free Wordtracker version provides you are just not good enough...

After a long search I finally found a very good free SEO tool called 'Web CEO'
that provided me with the things I wanted since Wordtracker was a paid service and the Overture keyword demand tool does not work most of the time which is really a bummer! Web CEO seems to combine both services for free.

Web CEO offers many features for free software and good helpdesk support even for the free version!

Some features I like the most about this software are:

* Supply and demand of certain keywords.
* A Keyword Effectiveness Index(more about that below)
* Submission to over hundreds of searchengines.
* View competition and their Google Pagerank.
* SEO training
* CSEM Certification(Competent Search Engine Marketer)

But there are many more options! (Ftp for example...)

Some things I didn't like about Web CEO...

- Web CEO appeared to be bugged in some cases while I did niche research and the program mysteriously decided to give me an error message. To Ctrl+Alt+Delete was the only way to shut it down.

The Web CEO helpdesk responded very quick though and helped me out to solve the problem!

- Only 5 keywords can be researched at a time in the 'explore niche' section making the research of a few hundred related keywords a tedious and time consuming task.

- Only 5 KEI results in the suggestions tool making the search for high demand, low supply and high KEI keywords not optimal. I am considering to buy the SmallBiz version where 50 results are displayed.
(1000 in the Professional version)

How to improve your Squidoo tags

Ok, enough talking...now on to the tutorial!

First, download the free version of Web CEO here:

In a nutshell: The higher the KEI, the more popular your keywords(tags) are, and the less competition they have. Which means you have a better chance of getting to the top. (Of Google and/or your Squidoo rank)

So it makes sense to do some research with Web CEO and pick high KEI keywords related to your Lens or your niche and place them here in your Squidoo Lens to improve traffic!

I tested this program on 1 of my 5 lenses I have(In this case my Zylom Games Lens) and improved it's tags with high KEI(highlighted in green) keywords suggested by Web CEO and did notice a significant increase in visitors and overall ranking.

I did not improve the other lenses and they did fall behind...

The Zylom page is not in optimal condition though and has way too many pictures in it to load quickly(and loosing visitors who do not have patience to wait that long!).

    Unfortunately, Squidoo tags are not at all the same thing as keywords used by search engines. Optimizing Squidoo tags for search engines is like optimizing your cooking recipe file for tax purposes.

    Squidoo tags inter-link relevant lenses on Squidoo. Pick long tail keywords used by no other lenses, and your tags will be useless. Search engines -- even Yahoo -- do not see the links in your tags as any more important than links elsewhere on the page. In fact, Google treats them as less important, since they are devoid of context (as opposed to inline links).

    I suggest your readers Google "Making the Most of Squidoo tags" for how to use tags. (It's not my post or blog; it's by a lensmaster who knows Squidoo very well -- in fact many of us benefit from his free tools for optimizing tags!)
