Can talking to my dog improve my dog's behavior?

Understanding dog behavior
Since pets are members of our family, it's only natural that many of us talk to dogs as if they were people. It gives us great joy and satisfaction to do this. Does the dog understand what you are saying? Probably not the words, but certainly the tone and your behavior is telling him a lot!
Dogs sure act like they understand every word you say sometimes. They will perk their ears with interest, cock their head to one side, sometimes they will even bark in response! Oh, they are trying to communicate alright, and they know you are communicating with them. The message is getting through, even though you are using two different methods to communicate with each other!

Dog behavior and talking
do dogs really understand us?
When we talk to our dogs, they will listen so intently that we would swear they understand every word we are saying. What they are actually doing, however, is exhibiting behavior that they know we like. When our dogs look at us and listen, what they are listening for is our tone. Most of us, when carrying on conversations with our dog will speak in a friendly tone and will often reach out and pet him, right? Your dog knows this! By your tone and your actions, your dog knows you are going to give him positive attention, and if he does those cute little things like perk his ears, he may even get food stuff! (dog treats)Dogs do learn simple words, and they will listen very intently for those words. When talking to the dog we may say, "Well, what should I make for dinner? Huh? What sounds good to eat?" BINGO! We said "Eat!" Most dogs know that word, and "food." Therefore, they will perk their ears and begin to look extremely interested in what you are saying.
My dog knows the word "outside." I could say anything with that word and he would still be happy. I could say "Hey! Want to go outside so I can beat you with a stick?" and he would run for the door, tail wagging the entire length of the house!
Sometimes, however, dogs will begin to react negatively. They may begin to get so anxious that they start exhibiting Bad behaviors. There are ways to train them to behave accordingly and not act out negatively.

How talking can improve dog's behavior
It's not what you say, it's how you say it
How talking can effectively be used to improve our dogs behavior is quite simple. Your dog considers you the alpha. When your dog exhibits unwanted behavior, it is best to remain calm and STOP looking at the dog. Tell him what you want him to do very calmly, and only give him eye contact and positive reinforcement when he complies. Remember to talk calmly, but firmly. Your dog wants to please you...he really does! All he needs is some guidance on Improving his behaviors. There are so many ways to train a dog without being invasive or unkind or even cruel. Dogs act out of instinct but will respond to our guidance. That is why I use the techniques explained in Sit-Stay-Fetch. It is a valuable tool that can be referred to time and time again to improve not only your dogs behavior, but you and your dog's relationship!

- Yes, all the time. I have a Westie and he definitely responds better when talked to. Funny about the comment below about the kitchen. I say almost the same thing. I say, "Get out of my kitchen!" LOL.
