Well, these people are plainly wrong when it comes to the importance of improving self esteem. Esteem is all about how you feel, but it's not a hippie, psycho-babble concept that only "new age" types have the time to work on. It not only changes how you feel, it also changes the results you get in life, and this alone makes it a very big deal!
Feeling good about yourself and having a healthy sense of self esteem is crucial to success in all areas of life. Children with healthy confidence perform better in school and have better social relationships. Adults with high self esteem are more successful in business, have better jobs, make more money and have better relationships than their insecure counterparts. There are even indications that a positive self image can help keep you healthy.Unfortunately not everyone is raised to have high self esteem. Luckily, as an adult you can make the choice to do something about it. Building self confidence can be done in different ways, but the one key to it all is you. You have to do the work; no one else can do it for you.
You may think that a poor self image is a personal problem and doesn't really concern anybody else, but actually how you feel about you affects your family, friends, co-workers and everyone in your life. When you decide to change how you feel about yourself, you will not only be helping yourself; you'll be helping these other people in your life as well.

Building up your self esteem/self image is as important to you as fueling your body with the proper nutrition. You see how you see yourself greatly impacts your outer world. You must work on building up your self image in your mind first before you actually see it manifest in your outer world. Use for example what Tiger Woods does before he actually takes a swing at the ball. He steps back and mentally sees himself go through the entire motion of hitting the ball, then watching the ball fly through the air and seeing it hit the ground where he anticipates the ball landing. That is exactly we must do with whatever life we want for ourselves. We must see ourselves in our minds eye first, before it actually happens in the physical world.
