Impulse of Delight - Celebrating the Joy of Creation

I am an independent artisan jeweller and textile artist, living in the mountain resort town of Whistler, British Columbia, Canada.  As a Whistler artist, my work is inspired by the natural beauty around me - richly saturated colours and curvaceous organic forms.  I am curious and adventurous, living by the motto "What would happen if....?"

My passion is making jewellery that is exquisitely unique, yet eminently wearable.  I see functionality as a creative challenge, rather than a limitation, believing that the very best jewellery is a form of performance art. To this end, I strive to incorporate movement wherever possible, whether by fluidly shifting links, or gems that shift and change with the light.

I began my creative journey at a very young age in the textile arts - sewing, quilting, knitting, and crochet, and I take great pleasure in incorporating these techniques into my jewellery.  I love the juxtaposition of strength and fluidity that occurs in creating "fabric" from precious metals, and best of all, the ethereal organic forms that are possible - shimmering silver leaves, pods with gemstones peeking through, sparkling silver flower necklaces with garnet centres.

Now my web business has come full circle as I have added to my site the hand dyed, and hand painted silk scarves, innovative designer evening bags, and creative hair clips and brooches which I have been selling at local Markets for some time.  I have also combined the worlds of textile and jewellery with mixed media pieces that have been very well received.

Coming soon due to popular demand: artist notecards based on my local Whistler nature photography.  These will be available at Bizarre Bazaar (see below) as well as on my website.

In Love With Colour

Colour is my love, my inspiration, my passion.

From the piercing blue sky,

To the secret life of dewdrops,

colour illuminates the path,

serenades the eyes,

warms the shivering heart,

and answers longing with abundance.

Singing Blues

Is anything more luxuriously, quintessentially Blue than a sparkling array of sapphires?

A lacy scarf of sky-blue silk, perhaps?

Artisan Designer Jewellery

A closer look

I specialize in sterling silver jewelry, with a few pieces in 14 kt gold filled. I forge and fabricate my own clasps and other components by hand, and revel in the sensual curves created by hammered silver. I adore gemstones with rich, saturated colours - ruby, sapphire, peridot, citrine, garnet, amethyst, tourmaline, emerald and rainbow moonstone are some of my favorites.

Inspired by the small things in Nature:

A Closer Look

I draw a great deal of inspiration from nature, particularly the colour palettes. Here's a dragonfly my daughter captured a few weeks ago:

I pulled out a palette:

And dyed up a luscious skein of fine spun silk:

This will become a luxurious silk scarf, with gently undulating pools of colour intersecting along its length.

Featured Gemstones: Ruby and Sapphire

Ruby The ruby is the red variety of corundum (all other colors are designated sapphire). Naturally, there is some variation in just where the line between a pink sapphire and a light-hued ruby is drawn, nevertheless, the distinction is purely semantic, albeit perhaps an attempt to alter the perceived value of the stone.

Hardness: 9

Care: Like sapphires, rubies are very hardy and safe for normal gemstone care methods.

------------------------------------------------

Sapphire the non-red variety of corundum (red being ruby), an aluminum oxide mineral. It occurs in a wide range of colors; however, convention dictates that only blue sapphires are simply titled "sapphire", while any other color is included in the name (eg. padparadscha sapphire, white sapphire). Pink is supposed to be classified as ruby, but in practice is often designated as sapphire. Sapphire is the most precious of the blue gemstones, due to its hardness, durability and luster, with translucent cornflower blue being the most desirable hue. Padparadscha, a vibrant orange pink, is considered to be the most precious of the non-blue shades, although there is some disagreement on exactly which shades ought to be given the designation.

Treatments: Sapphires are routinely heated to improve their color, an industry accepted practice.

Hardness: 9

Care: Sapphires are very hardy and safe for normal gemstone care methods.
