AIDS and its Ails

Ever since Rock Hudson passed away, thanks to something pernicious he acquired and Liz Taylor set apart a chunk of her earnings (whatever be the source) for research connected with it; there has been an indiscriminate spate of news / publicity for AIDS in the newspapers, magazines and Radio / TV discussions. Soon it might find its way into kindergarten textbooks I suppose. It has acquired a perverse pervasiveness at a macro level, akin to Bofors at a micro level. In the initial stages, AIDS (sorry, I am still not conversant with the expansion) was supposed to be an affliction which affected gays / homosexuals. The 'heteros' were all complacent in their pursuits taking it for granted that it was peculiar to the posterior. Gradually, when it transpired that the disease can spread through as wide a configuration of contacts as oral and toilet seats, they jerked off (no pun here) their complacence and thought of prophylactics and preventives which almost bordered on morality. If fecundity is a ruptured condom; abstinence is morality. This is what made me take kindly to AIDS.

AIDS and its aids

Recently (at the time of chronicling in my memoirs), I chanced to read a reasonably contemporary issue (Jan / Feb '88) of Glamour; which I browse through for pictures of the St. Tropez women models - lean and hungry like Afghan hounds bereft of their coat. In that particular issue there was an article based on an extensive survey of some 5000 single women in the age group 16 to 60. They were all asked a very simple question: "How has AIDS affected your sex life?" It appears that 67 percent replied that they had started using condoms, 22 percent said they had become monogamous and the rest admitted abstinence. Well, (don't you agree) despite the detestation one had for AIDS; in a redemptive way, it has placed morality on the pedestal it once occupied; especially in countries where sex was available almost off the shelf for the mere push of a button; much like music from a jukebox.

I am living in Southern Africa -- 0ver 70% of people are HIV positive. We are all aware of AIDS nowadays here -- thanks God, I am not a young woman -- I rather have to worry about money. Keep well aware and safe!
