In Between The Sheets - short stories by Ian McEwan

"Pornography" by Ian McEwan (from In Between The Sheets)

"Pornography" by Ian McEwan - hell hath no fury like a couple of women scorned...

An arrogant, feckless, under-achiever sleeps around, contracts a sexually transmitted disease but doesn't bother to tell his sexual partners, two of whom eventually cotton on to his philandering ways and together hatch a sado-masochistic plot to seek their revenge.

"Reflections Of A Kept Ape" by Ian McEwan (from In Between The Sheets)

"Reflections Of A Kept Ape" by Ian McEwan - monkey business taken to extremes...

A female "one hit wonder" best selling author develops writers block and in order to stimulate her "muse" embarks upon a sexual relationship with her pet chimpanzee. The story is told from the viewpoint of the chimp after the end of the "relationship".

"Two Fragments: Saturday And Sunday, March 199-" by Ian McEwan (from In Between The Sheets)

"Two Fragments: Saturday And Sunday, March 199-" by Ian McEwan - picking up the pieces...

This two part tale is set in a post apocalyptic London and follows two days in the life of a young man as he tries to care for his young daughter and hold the threads of normality together.

"Dead As They Come" by Ian McEwan (from In Between The Sheets)

"Dead As They Come" by Ian McEwan - dumb and dummyer...

This tale concerns a 40-something multi-millionaire, veteran of three failed marriages and his descent into madness as he "falls head over heels in love" with a shop window dummy. Managing by subterfuge to purchase the mannequin, he takes her home and installs her as his "wife". He lavishes clothes, gifts and long romantic dinners on her, pours out his very soul and makes passionate, energetic love to her...throughout it all though he is perturbed to find that she remains cold and silent (...I wonder why????). Eventually this little love-in comes to an abrupt end when Our Very Own Looney-Toon figures that "Helen" (the dummy) is "having an affair" with Brian (the chauffeur). Eventually it all ends in tears when Our Man finally flips totally and rapes and "murders" Helen before trashing his art collection.

"In Between The Sheets" by Ian McEwan (from In Between The Sheets)

"In Between The Sheets" by Ian McEwan - growing up is hard to do...

Story told from the perspective of a divorced man whose bitter ex-wife who hates him. The pair reluctantly get together in a cafe where they discuss the upcoming birthday of their teenage daughter. Daughter sends letter asking man for money to buy record player. Man feels he is being exploited so refuses, then feels guilty, so sends more money than originally asked for. Man goes out and buys daughter lots of birthday presents which he then decides not to give her. Man goes to ex-wife's house on daughters birthday and meets daughter's best friend. Daughter asks if she and friend can come and stay with him in holidays. Daughter and friend come to stay. Man gets up in middle of night to use toilet and is shocked to hear sounds of lovemaking coming from bedroom of daughter and friend. Decides to give hidden birthday presents to daughter after all. ...the story lurches from one pointless scenario to another with a "dramatic bit" shoved in presumably in an attempt to keep the reader awake - the daughter's best friend/lover is a 3 foot high female dwarf.

"To And Fro" by Ian McEwan (from In Between The Sheets)

"To And Fro" by Ian McEwan - um...

This post from a discussion forum sums up this story perfectly...
McEwan's story, "To and Fro"

I can add nothing more as I'm clueless as to what this story is about despite several attempts to obtain some meaning from it...if you have any idea, please send me your interpretations and I'll consider adding them ;)

"Psychopolis" by Ian McEwan (from In Between The Sheets)

"Psychopolis" by Ian McEwan - God Bless America!

English bloke goes to America. He meets a woman called Mary who quickly becomes his lover. So far so good...it goes downhill rapidly though. By halfway down the page, Mary has demanded that she spends an entire weekend shackled to his bed...the plot then meanders around English blokey and his experience with assorted American oddballs...another meandering and pointless offering.

My hero: Jarvis Cocker by Jon McGregor
I first heard Jarvis Cocker's voice when he read Ian McEwan's "Last Day of Summer" on Radio 1, some time in 1993. The reading sparked an early interest in McEwan's work, but it also led me to the music of Pulp, a love of which I've retained ever since.
