We Have Lost a Very Creative Man who Has Changed the Culture of the Entire World

Steve Jobs will always be remembered as a visionary. He passed away on October 5th, 2011 after a prolonged fight with pancreatic cancer.

I personally remember owning first an Apple II, then an Apple IIC which I loved. I still own this Apple IIc - anyone want to buy it? It's an antique. Use contact me and send me a bid and how to reach you. Maybe it's time to part with it. I never owned a Lisa, nor a Mac. IBM crowded Apple out with its deep pockets and dominated the world of business at least in the 1980s. I was always an Apple fan but wasn't into graphics then, so IBM was the platform I ended up on. I have never liked Microsoft nor Bill Gates - more on him later.

One reason I feel Steve's death so strongly is that he was only 56 years old, about 7 years younger than me when he died. This brings it home that I might not have a lot longer on this earth and to make the best of this time while I can. Steve leaves behind a wife, Laurene, and three children (Reed, Erin, and Eve) and another daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, from a woman he never married.

Steve's birth mother, Joanne Simpson never graduated from college and that his birth father didn't graduate from high school. But he was raised by adoptive parents Clara and Paul Jobs. He started to attend Reed College in Oregon, but never graduated. He did use what he learned about calligraphy when developing fonts for the Mac. Steve's life in business had it's ups and downs.

Steve was also responsible for the iPod and iTunes which changed the way we listen to music around the globe. Later he helped create the iPhone and more recently the iPad. Over time this lens will be added to, so you might want to bookmark it.

While Working on the Mac Jobs Hired Bill Gates

Bill Gates Later Fired Jobs

In 1977 Gates and Jobs collaboratively created the AppleSoft BASIC programming language. Subsequently this led to disputes about how much of the Mac's features were "borrowed" for Windows and led to the firing of Jobs from Apple.

What Steve said about Bill Gates, "I wish him the best, I really do. I just think he and Microsoft are a bit narrow. He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger."

After being fired Steve said "it gave me a change to be a beginner again!" And he went on to bigger and better things only to return to Apple later..

A Quote that I Found Very Profound

From Steve Jobs' Commencement Address at Stanford University in June 2005

This is just a small part of his address:

"No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

Apple's Founding Documents Auctioned

The following is a mostly from mashable.com and cbsnews.com

The original founding documents of Apple Computer Company from 1976 were sold at Sotheby's, for $1.59-million to Eduardo Cisneros, chief executive officer of Cisneros Corp..

The papers include two typed documents signed by "Stephen G. Wozniak", "steven p. jobs", together with amendments.

The buyer also received a Statement of Withdrawal signed by "Ronald G. Wayne," a paper that documents Wayne relinquishing his 10% stake in the company for $800.

Wayne later received an additional $1,500, but it's still a bad deal, given that Apple is now worth some $350 billion.

How Do You Watch TV?

If not on-line now, someday soon I'm sure you will watch it at least ocassionally on-line.

Steve Jobs has transformed the way many of us watch TV. In the 1990s there was just talk about watching TV on-line. Now it is actually possible. It all started when Jobs started selling TV shows and movies via Apple's iTunes store. ABC and NBC were the first to sign up followed by many other stations.

Now days it is common for people to download TV shows to their iPad, iPod and HD televisions. This altered the TV landscape completely. This weeks TV Guide Magazine quotes Bob Iger, President of ABC as saying, "I've never seen anyone as dedicated to turning dreams and big ideas into reality. He was amazing that way."

Steve Legally Drove without License Plates

For privacy reasons Steve didn't want a license plate. In California you can drive a car for six months without a license plate legally. So Steve simply leased a new Mercedes (identical model) every six months.

He also made it a habit to park in the handicapped spot at Apple even before he became sick.

Ah, Steve Jobs was a brilliant man and quite a visionary ... he will be truly missed!

I knew very little about him until recently. I use Windows on a netbook and it suits my lifestyle. One thing I am aware of about the iPad, though, is its application for children with special needs. It provides augmentative communication cheaper than the traditional devices and looks "cool" so it doesn't mark a child as different. That's a huge contribution, I think. Jobs does sound like a visionary

When I finally switched to Macs, I discovered that computers don't have to be frustrating pieces of garbage I just want to throw off of a cliff! And the iPod Touch has been an incredible addition to my life; I can carry a whole computer in my purse or pocket.

Rest in Peace Steve Jobs
