Inclusive Children's Books, Posters and Resources

Ranked #5,646 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #200,507 overall

Children learn a lot from play, and in particular from stories. Complicated situations can be broken down into a similar story which they will understand, and will instinctively know to apply to their own particular situation. For this reason, books which tell stories about how some families are different, or some children are different, will help those involved to explain, and to understand, their lives.

Children whose parents have separated, or who have gay parents, or who have been adopted or are going to be placed in foster care are all catered for in the books below. So, too, are children whose siblings have disabilities, children who feel different to their friends, and children who have friends and family from many different cultures.

As well as helping children who are in these circumstances, these books will also assist other children to understand that people all over the world come in different colors and situations, and will help to develop in them an understanding and accepting nature which they can carry through to their adulthood.

It's Okay To Be Different

This book is beautiful in its simplicity. Its message that it is okay to be different shines through each page, leading children to not only accept their own uniqueness, but also the uniqueness and difference in their friends, family and others. A vital lesson for every young child to learn, both to value themselves and to value others.
